How could NGC do this ? Do I have any recourse for this ?

Are you sure it is the same coin?

Yep, the only 1891-O I sent in with four other coins and I took pictures of each before shipping.

Especially if the coin was dark, like the OP describes.

like GDJMSP said "it could be just the lighting" having a stroke before hand won't help. Wait on the coin.

Yeah I thought you had the coin in hand. You can't go by the pictures on this one. The NGC verification lighting is almost always terrible. You don't have a leg to stand on with this argument until you get the coin back.

Odds are, they kept you Dime because it had color, and sent you one that had already been cleaned in their stock. They probably are going to sell it to another collector that uses their service a lot.

I have always had second thoughts on sending my coins in to be graded. My concern is that they would not send me back my original coin.

Plus, I think the grading is determined by how much money you spend with them!

Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of MS66's but not a whole lot above that? Once they grade coins in the higher MS bracket, the value of that initial coin probably drops because more coins within that MS grading and investors with an MS69 don't want to see their coin devalued because someone has a higher grade.

I have 100's of flawless pennies, dating from 1940 to 2021. But I'm not sending one in. The last thing I want to do is pay money to have it graded, and then it comes back with a "Cleaned" grading.

As you all know, tinted coins with color can fetch a higher price. All my coins look like they just came off the production line....not one scratch! Okay, maybe this one I will post here has a scratch.

Here's an example. I found this in a box of pennies I bought at the bank. It might have been cleaned, but not by my hands. IMG_0609.JPG IMG_0608.JPG

I'd think they'd need consent for that, Doug.
If it is gone, they ruined it, or it's a different coin. Get it back from them, then call them up. If they won't take care of you, tell them either of two things is going to happen when you hang up the phone: 1) their customers are going to see the before and after pictures in all the coin forums, including theirs; or 2) they're going to cut you a check for $500 in damages. Tell them the conversation's being recorded for customer satisfaction purposes, and get the contact information of the bum you left off with. Then follow through. That's how I'd handle this.

I'll wait, and will post as soon as it is in hand, I really hope that the lighting was all wrong and that would be fine.

I really hope the lighting was poorly done but if not that is a Seated Dime I wanted to see get a high grade on, the way it looks now under that lighting is upsetting.

I will be one angry person and will let everyone know what NGC has done when I get my coin back in my hands.

If they indeed ruined it, give them the chance to make good on it. If they request it, send them the before-and-after pictures, as that's a reasonable request. But Doug is right, they do this. But that's only because their customers lay down for it. You've got the pictures, and don't have to do that. But there's where you are. Good luck.

They aren't going to conserve a coin unless you approve for it to happen, unless somehow do it by mistake but I can't think of any time I've heard of that happening, they make money off the service.

if they do conserve it, it's not going to get a cleaned details designation, they will advise against it being conserved if it appears it will not improve the coin.

could the coins get mixed up and confused? Possible I suppose but they have plenty of measures in place to keep that from happening. but this is the same coin in all pictures, so this isn't an accidental switcheroo.

your pictures are clearly on a steep angle, theirs are straight on, and light sources are different locations. this is everything with how a toned coin photographs. Angle is necessary in order to get the toning to "pop" on a camera, otherwise, it's not very visible.

I think it will look right when you have it in hand, However I also think that they are correct on the AU details cleaned. The reverse looks ok, the Obverse looks like it's had some work around the date and the lady in the fields that would get it pegged as cleaned in my opinion, from these pictures, maybe before you owned it, maybe a long time ago, but once the luster is impaired, it don't come back. Just off the pictures of course, I'd need to see it in hand to know for sure but spots on the obverse don't reflect right and look flat and dull compared to other areas.

Just one persons opinion on this. comparing the two it's the same coin, lighting and angle makes all the difference in the world on how a coin photographs moreso with silver and toning than copper.
A sample of my experiments with different Kelvins (temperature of the light).
Incadescent is more like the top one a warm light. 3000K
Middle is a halogen or LED cool light 7000K
Bottom is a neutral "daylight" 4000K not too yellow, not too blue.
the paper is a white sheet of paper. I'd say, wait to see it in hand. It's going to be lighting why the toning isn't popping, a camera doesn't function exactly like an eye does.

That’s a proof Lincoln. Unusual but they do make their way into circulation.
I doubt very seriously that NGC switched coins as you described. They would be out of business in short order if that were the case. They rely on repeat business. Switching coins on customers is a practice that would prevent customers from returning. Zero chance of this happening on purpose. Even accidentally would be next to zero.

    Are you serious?

If this a serious response, it's extremely irresponsible. Why would a top line TPG that makes millions of dollars in profits risk their reputation and credibility by swapping swapping out lower value coins. It makes no sense whatsoever

Please stop the conspiracy theory garbage.
