Hi, What do these coins generally sell for? I think I just won 2 Richard The Lionhearted versions. Is this a specialized area as I think it is. Rich
Never heard of it. My cursory Google search produced some coins in NGC slabs with that pedigree, but I didn't find much background information. Sounds interesting. Heck, all ancient and medieval hoards are interesting, right?
Montlebeau Hoard - Medieval Silver Coins from 12th/13th Century - Richard the Lionheart, more - NGC - YouTube I see plenty of these for sale on-line, but no academic papers. This youtube clip says they are from France. I have seen a few hoards of coins for sale at coin shows.
Well, I am going to do the unthinkable, cancel my winning bid on two Deniers. I have looked and looked and can’t find any documentation on these coins from Montlebeau Hoard. Maybe it is a made up hoard. I see coins on EBay and all over the place from this hoard. I just don’t want to get stuck, and if they ban me fine.
I googled "Montlebeau tresor"(tresor being French for "hoard") and found this, which I suspect is the same hoard based on the description of its contents and disposition: https://www.francebleu.fr/infos/insolite/un-tresor-exceptionnel-decouvert-a-vareilles-1567770306
It was a hoard of about 14,000 French Deniers. Here are some pics I saw of it in 2020 before it came to NGC. Most of the coins were fairly generic in average grades. There were a few exceptional coins, but not many.
