Your sets look like the normal SMS packaging done by the mint for 1966 and 1967. It even said so on the lower right. How does the Postal Commemorative Society play into this?
Those long, slender plastic cases were issued by the US Mint with the half dollar, quarter, dime, nickel and penny in them. The "Postal Society", or whatever this organization is supposed to be, had nothing to do with making or issuing them. ~ Chris
This is from Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCS_Stamps_&_Coins Postal Commemorative Society ("PCS") was first formed in 1970 as a division of MBI. Its first product was U.S. first day of issue covers.[3] In 1973, MBI was still a subsidiary of Glendinning Companies. It consisted of two divisions, Postal Commemorative Society and The Danbury Mint. In December 1975, MBI ended all its legal ties with Glendinning Companies and became an independent business. Easton Press was formed in 1975 as MBI's third division.[3] In 2006, Postal Commemorative Society changed its name to PCS Stamps & Coins to reflect the shift in its product offers.[3]
Yes they are sealed and packaged by the mint and then sealed in vinyl by Postal Society and placed on an information panel.
Seems this was already mentioned, but I'll add a link to CoinFacts anyway: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-50c-sms/6844 "One of the interesting diagnostic features of the Specimen Strike 1964 Half Dollars is a small, raised defect that appears to hang from the crosslet of the 4. This defect has been seen on all examples except one."
Chris, you are correct. I apologize. I purchased 4 Postal Comm. Society albums of 25 years of US uncirculated coin mint sets and 4 Postal Comm. Society albums of The Complete JFK Uncirculated US Half-Dollar Collection and thought the coins came from the Postal Commemorative Society albums. They did not and came in another collection I purchased., Thanks for correcting me.
Hi I have also read somewhere (sorry but can't recall at moment) that on the reverse some of the rays where they meet the stars are broken in the SMS variety. You can clearly see this in the PCGS images at https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-50c-sms/6844. For comparison check a non-SMS variety here: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-50c/6706 What does everyone think or know about this aspect? Agree...talk about a "run-on" sentence (paragraph)...whew! But on your PS...how can someone "Listen..." to print text...? Just kidding...I write/say that all the time, also, then wonder the how of "listening" to writing in the literal sense.
Interesting diagnostic. We are talking about the four stars between the eagles right (facing) wing and the back of the head and neck, correct? Using the coins from your links it does appear to have a diffident distinction.
