Post coins you loved so much you got 2 of'em...(even upgrades count) L Manilius Torquatus & L Cornelius Sulla 82BC military mint AR denarii, 16mm, 3.57 &3.44gms respectively..
Nice coins and fun idea for a thread! The children's arms are doing different things on each coin -- not that it matters to anyone.
From the same lot. Funny thing is that initially I thought there was another identical one (I was a complete beginner) So the decision was simple - keep all 3! These coins are a bit of a mystery for me. Bought this one 4-5 years ago, when I was not actively collecting ancient coins ... this summer another wild Quintillus appeared .... Although the styles are clearly different, I suspect these are the same RIC number RIC V Quintillus 29, unless I am missing something, as I can't find other Providentia coins with baton and sceptre/
I had this example Constantine I A.D. 327-8 Ӕ nummus 18x19mm 3.2g CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG; rosette diademed head right. GLORIA EXERCITVS; Soldier holding reversed spear in right, left hand on shield S in left field. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 22 but just got this one because of the differences in the depiction of Constantine Constantine I A.D. 327-8 Ӕ nummus 18mm 3.1g CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG; diademed head right. GLORIA EXERCITVS; Soldier holding reversed spear in right, left hand on shield, Γ in left field. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 22
Divus Augustus Dupondius , on the first one i almost see that he is smiling. Rome, ca. 22 - 30 AD struck under Tiberius RIC I (Tiberius) 81; BMCRE 146 (Tiberius) Ob.: DIVVS•AVGVSTVS•PATER• radiate head of Augustus left Rev.: PROVIDENT altar-enclosure of the Ara Providentiae Augusti with double paneled door in the front, surmounted by uncertain ornaments (or flames?) at left and right; large S-C across fields
Excellent Sullas! And even more excellent idea!!! I'll start with a couple of Macedonian shields (don't worry, there will be many more to come):
I'm kind of twisting the intent of this thread, because I don't own two copies of this coin...but I've had this coin twice. I had the bottom coin first, sold it and regretted it, and then I found an obverse and reverse die match for it (top coin) and had to buy it again because of that.
Last week I picked up a second “Sol facing“ variant of this common reverse type (bottom). One of Victor’s eBay auctions. Often something interesting to be had there. Quite worn, but quite rare. Or at least scarce.
