Wondering what this is and it's age. I'll guess it is a medal? Any value? It's about two inches. Not silver, some type of base metal. Found it at a little coin shop along the side of the road in south Texas, about 30 years back. It was a strange shop that was packed with coins. Just a small portable building with a sign out front that said COINS. The shop was so small it could be loaded on a truck and moved. Never saw anything like it. Thanks for any information you may have.
It is a commemorative medal having to do with the Venetian Republic of 1849, and the formation of it's government. I'll have to do more research later to give you more info (have to go now).
I think the language is italian and has something to do with GOVERNMENT FORMING. Type the text into an online translator
Obverse: Seated figure (Saint Mark?) with sword, flag, and lion, text "All cowardice must die here" Reverse: text "The Assembly of Representatives of the State of Venice, in the name of God and of the people, unanimously declare Venice will resist Austria at all costs. For this purpose President Manin is invested with unlimited powers. Venice, April 2, 1849. President G. Minotto, Vice Presidents L. Pasini, G.B. Vare, Secretaries G. Pasini, G.B. Ruffini, A. Somma, P. Valussi." A medal from Venice and their resistance against Austria, for more details Google "Republic of San Marco" or "Daniele Manin". Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Your "coin shop" by the road sounds like something out of SciFi movie. "After purchasing the odd coin, I looked back and the store was gone."
My thoughts, exactly! I am constantly amazed at the knowledge, expertise, helpfulness, and overall good will exhibited by CT members. I've had to change my stance on being a member of the CT club. I've always said, "I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member", but, I'm proud to be a member of CT! In fact, I want to remain a member so badly, that I try to keep my opinions to myself. But, sometimes I fail miserably, like now, lol. I love CT (except for the rare occasions that I don't, lol). Y'all really are the best!
