    Hi
I have a Ancient Greek Sicily Silver Didrachm Naxos coin and was just curios on your guys opinion on it, I know there is some very knowledge able ppl in this group.
Coin is 29mm and 16grams and under the patina the coin looks to be silver.
The coin was found with metal detector and hasnt been cleaned since it was found..

Did you find it yourself? If so, keep it safe.

A similar coin fetched 240.000 chf in 2018 at NAC.

While your skepticism is well-founded- especially as regards the coin, which looks suspect- the story itself is not automatically implausible.

I've seen replica Spanish cobs that were found here (as well as real ones), and myself once dug a reproduction of an 18th century military button on one site where I had also found a very rare and definitely authentic War of 1812 belt plate. (I suspect the repro button was lost by a reenactor during the 250th anniversary reenactments in 1992 of a nearby 1742 battle).

So reproduction items do make it into the ground, and get found by detectorists, occasionally. Not saying that's definitely the case here, but it does and can happen (albeit not terribly often).

A lady that was friends with my mom had it and I have always done all the handy man stuff around her house and i never charged her for any of the work and after i built some ramps for her house to make it more wheel chair friendly she came out got me had me come inside and she just said she had something that her dad found with his metal detector that he was really proud of and that she was waiting to give it to the right person. And then gave me the coin so real or fake i atleast know she thought it was something special. Ive just had it put away for few years and was just curios about it.

I will echo the general sentiment so far and will say that it is a reproduction piece. The details are too mushy and while the metal may be white, it doesn't scream silver to me. Lastly, the flan edges seem almost too smooth and round.

Most likely, it's a tourist fake which somehow made it to your location and was lost or thrown out, later to be found. I too have heard stories of authentic Greek and Roman coins being found odd places such as the US and even Japan (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo...-empire-are-found-in-ruins-of-japanese-castle). One coin I acquired many years ago which was found in Israel was actually struck in Metapontum. If genuine (which I still believe it to be), it would certainly have an interesting story to tell.

If authentic, your stater of Naxos would be a pretty rare and expensive coin, making a casual loss in any location extremely unlikely.

    Just my $0.02.

    It was found in israel.
Her dad used to travel the world looking for stuff in the ground.
There was a ring that she gave me that was also found with it.

With the thick deposits, real or fake, I doubt if a correct determination of authenticity can be made….IMHO.

I have no idea if real or fake. Would be nice to know the history on it tho.
The Lady's dad found it 40-50 years ago if not longer . im not sure where to take it to find out more about it.

For this one, let's go with Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation (its fake) is the most likely one.

    Basically, there's two options
    1. its a replica fake
    2. its a coin worth over 200k

    which one seems most reasonable?

Ok . thank you for all the input every one.
Its all good advice , guess since it seems to everyone its a obvious fake i should probably assume so and not send it in .. And thats crazy hotwheelsearl 200k that would of been so cool that kinda stuff doesn't happen to me tho.. Lol

I agree with the general consensus here. I am certainly no expert in this type, but in general, it just doesn't seem quite right.
