i have this strang coin and i think its European but realy its the first time i see like this style or form weight : 50.15 g diameter : 41 mm thikness : 7 mm realy its big coin you see on it a knight and citadel ( make you think of crusader age ) i have 3 opinion : 1- coins 2- a medal belong to the crusader age 3- maybe a weight ( there isnt any interest in mint and the big weight 50 grams ) I am waiting your opinion i wrote to the british museum to ID it and never got a replay. and ask an expert and tell me its intersted and he will try to ID it ... (still waiting )
This piece is intriguing: it is certainly stylistically similar to work of the middle ages. The obverse is reminiscent of an impression of a seal: the die was smaller than the flan. As far as I know, there are no AE issues of that period with such size and weight, so it is either a later fabrication (fantasy issue) or a medal. May I ask where and how you acquired it ?
Indeed, it looks strange. I don't believe there are any Medieval or Renaissance European coins of this shape. Can you provide a transcription of the legend?
I've transcribed the legend from the photographs provided. Obverse: DOIIV OSD [illegible] ARTN [...] I Reverse: S [...] TE [...] US [...] That's pretty cryptic to me.
