I'm of a firm belief that you can describe all collectors/investors by a triangle. The following are each of the corners:

Investment driven - You buy the coin only because you believe it will increase in value.
Exclusivity driven - You buy the coin because it's extremely rare, and you want the privilege of owning this extremely scarce coin.
Emotionally driven - You buy the coin because there's some emotional value. Maybe you just like the design or the history.

No one is strictly at a corner, but everyone's instead somewhere in the middle of the triangle. However, we're all closer to one corner than another.

At one point I was going to write up a detailed analysis complete with formulas derived from my "other life" as a real estate investor. I didn't post it out of the very real fear of boring everyone here.

Personally, I tend to be closer to the "emotional" corner. I buy coins because I love their histories. I have no intentions to ever sell. That being said, I try to buy the best quality ones possible (exclusivity corner) for ideally a very good price (investment corner).

For real estate, I'm obviously close to the investment corner, but I like finding properties in up-and-coming areas (exclusivity corner) and the place has to look decent (emotional corner).

Great videos! I have been looking for something like this for a long time. Thanks @dougsmit for bringing them to our attention, and thank you @Classical Numismatics for making such wonderful and educational videos.

It seems the @Classical Numismatics user account was banned, ostensibly for no reason, is there a mod here that can reinstate it for him?

  5. Yeah, talking to him on another platform and he was really bummed to see he was banned for nothing, he really wanted to be here.

I wonder, why he was banned from CoinTalk.
I wonder, if he was not really the same person, as the Youtube person.
    I don't know.
According to his pop-up info, it looks like, he only posted 1 time.
However, I have a possible memory, that maybe, he posted more than once, on this thread. But I don't remember for sure.
Maybe it was a deleted post, that got him banned. Maybe he was banned for advertising, outside of the "Advertising" area.
    I don't know.
    Je ne sais pas.

Ugh, that’s a bummer. I really like his videos. Hopefully, they can take a look and let him back in. I was temporarily banned when I first joined. I signed up for an account, then later couldn’t get into it, so created another account. Unknown to me, this was a no-no and I was banned for like 3 months or something. Anyway, could have been something silly like this… hopefully it can be reversed or is temporary.

Or, maybe, there is something, about the content of his Youtube videos, that got him banned. I don't know.

He's definitely the same person. A few of us know him outside of CoinTalk and he sent a screenshot showing he got banned here.

From what I understand this isn't unheard of for new users and can have no explanation but it would be great if it can be resolved somehow. Is there an admin or mod I can tag in this post?

It's probably because he either made a new account or has made a account in the past. If you try make a second account it gets banned shortly after, that's automatic. I'm sure a mod will unban him.

I don't believe that's the case here and I've also heard from others that they've been banned for no reason and had no prior CT account. It's pretty shocking an account like Classical Numismatics' can be banned for no reason and no one bats an eye, especially given how many of us here watch his videos.

And even if he had an old account, maybe he forgot he had one or no longer has access to it or, given that usernames can't be changed, maybe he wanted a new account for his YouTube channel rather than one linked to him personally. Is there no scenario in which creating a new account may be warranted?

A moderator does not have that authority or means for that action , only the administrators , Doug and Peter have that control. Multiple accounts allow for more bad things to occur rather than the occasional unknown problem. So if you wish to alert Doug about it , that is the possible solution. Jim

This sort of heavy-handed, thoughtless, arrogant and anonymous "moderation" is precisely why I've chosen to no longer post in this forum (although, obviously, I've made an exception for this post.)

I am a volunteer, as are all moderators. I did not make the rules, I just enforce them to my best ability. You are a member as am I, and either of us are free to leave or not post if we so wish, but ALL of us have to follow the rules , even those who contribute towards the forum by supporting it financially. Why not start your own forum like Peter did this one, open if for free and pay to keep it at the level we have, and allow derogatory comments on your own forum.
Let me know when you start one. Have a nice day.

Thanks Jim, I think I messaged the right Doug about it. He responded that they can't "discuss matters of this nature with other members" so it's not clear if he will look into it or not. Obviously I don't need to be in the know about the details, I'm just reaching out on their behalf since I'm not sure they have any means to do so themselves.

It's unfortunate to say but based on what I've heard from a number of other collectors that have had their accounts banned (ostensibly for no reason), this may be a wasted effort.

That's above my pay grade as my military oldest brother used to say. What I have been part of my self and speaking for myself ,is that banning "ostensibly for no reason" doesn't occur on the forum , there is a reason, but you and I do not know it.

Indeed. The Powers That Be always have their reasons. You (my fellow members) or I might not always agree with them- in fact, might not always know what they are- but rest assured that there ARE reasons. The admins are not vengeful deities who hurl their lightning bolts on a whim.

In that case it'd be great to know the reason why, I don't believe the user was informed.

The Powers That Be do not always state their reasons (at least not on the public forums- and they likely have their reasons for that). That's up to Doug (@GDJMSP) to say- or not say, as the case may be. It's "above my pay grade", as @desertgem put it.
