Hello, I'm a new user and wanted to see if I could get any information on this $5. It's pretty worn. I took it to the bank and they said it was legit but that they had never seen one with red on just one side. I have a scan of it attached.
it looks to me like there was some sort of 'bleaching' done to it after it entered circulation. I have seen that alot on older fractionals. Either 'bleaching' specifically or oxidation in the ink - odd that it only happend on one side though....
Maybe the same thing that is done to the old $2 bills was done to this. The serial numbers and treasury seal look alot lighter than normal as well.
Some people chemically treat red seal $2 bills to make them yellow. No yellow $2 bill was printed so some sellers fool people with them to make lots of money on a note that would only retail for a few dollars over face value. http://cgi.ebay.com/Golden-Seal-2-yellow-note-two-dollar-bill-in-AU-LQQK_W0QQitemZ8342653182 Take this guy for example who is selling several. What he is doing borders on fraud in my opinion. Isn't it interesting how all of his auctions are "private" btw.
That sounds very possible. The whole bill looks strange to me and the serial numbers and treasury seal are a lot brighter than normal. Even the paper part of the bill looks different, like lighter or whiter. It was a $5 that someone payed their bill with. I figured it might be some sort of chemical that messed up the bill but since it was red just on that one part I thought it might mean something. The other thing with that guy on ebay selling something that isn't real...that seems really dirty. I'm sure he does private so no one can tell the bidders the truth (if they really don't exist). Maybe someone should report him to ebay.
i would agree - intentially misleading someone like that - especially now that Ebay has a speacial warning that the seller must be sure he knows the item he is selling is authentic before the can post coins and currency for auction. but i think he gets away with it with this line in his auctionbody -- This was probably originally a RED seal --- ya dont say
I cant really tell on my pc - is the bank code also red? The seal that is red was black, but offset printed whereas the other black ink on the bill is intaglio/engraved. Different inks will react differently. Altered I am sure, but done nicely, and a neat effect.
