I have a hard time passing up a soap box slab. The coins age nicely and you know that the coin was graded more on a technical standard rather than a market grade.
These 3 Jefferson's were all part of a single submission
Please give you opinion of the grade using the technical standards of yester years
and also give your opinion of the coin using todays market grading.
    (PCGS standards)

With all of the chatter I'd give it a technical grade of MS63.

MS65 on the slab. Here is mine still in the original mint cello. Looks about the same except the 6th step on mine is all the way across. I think I paid just a few cents over face on the mint set. Polish_20200318_201037600~2.jpg

Is that across the board. 62 Technical 62 Market?

MS 64 5FS and looks PL (that would not be noted on the slab if it's an older generation like you mentioned). I don't think the grade in this example would change using market grading (they would likely call it the same 63/64).

It does have some very smooth reflective fields, I personally don't feel that this coin would merit a PL designation. Is that even a given designation on a type 1 modern?

What is a type 1 modern vs a type 2 modern?

And pretty much all business strike coins qualify for the PL/DPL at NGC. Here is a nickel:

Edit: looking through NGC pages, I'm fairly certain it's not just "pretty much all" but in fact all business strikes can be designated as PL/DPL if NGC thinks the coin merits it.

Giving that beat-up coin an MS-67 makes you wish there were a “LOL button.” It’s got the steps, not the grade.

That was just an example of PL on a modern nickel. Not the grade of the coin.
    What are your guess's?

63 in the past, 64 now. I think there are 5 full steps, but I wouldn’t buy it as such.
