It looks like a 1640 Netherlands Silver Lion Daalder, possibly from Utrecht.

Yours is probably worth between $100-$125, it's hard to grade from the small photos. Post larger photos and I try and grade it better for you.

I have done a little reading on this coin since it was properly named. It is possible that this coin could have came from the New york area. I believe at this time NEW YORK was still called New Holland or something like that. And the Utrecht province of Holland had rights to mint coins for the New World as did the other 6 provinces in Holland at the time. I think Utrecht minted these coins from 1589-1697 until they came up with the Leeuwendaalder. It also is 75 percent silver. Any more info would be helpful though, because I believe my cousin wants to sell it.

That coin is in VG/F condition, with some corrosion or pitting on the reverse, and thus is worth around $60.

Good research. New York was once called New Amsterdam, before many Dutch investors lost their money speculating on tulip bulbs.

Also, I believe that JeromeLS is correct, that your Daalder is VG/F and worth between $60-$75. It looks like it was used as a tool or a weapon at one time. Still very interesting though.

I have an older cousin who used to own a pawn shop in the past. He brought it over with some other pieces from around the world to ask me if I know how much they would be worth. I used the CoinTalk resources to help him out fo rmost of the coins, but he pulled this one out last and asked me if I knew what it was. He thought it was junk. It kinda looks like it:) , but after looking at it with my loupe i was able to tell him that I thought it was pretty old and probably not junk. I am actually trying to sell it on another site right now( I can't say, because it will get me in trouble) so if any one wants it they can get it if they want. Wish I had the extra money or I would buy it just to give it a good home.

Great find! See what becoming a "picker" does sometimes.
