I have a 1939 square 5c coin. It looks very much like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Na50cent.png However instead of being marked as being from the Antilles it is marked as being from the "Koninkrijk der Nederlanden". My problem is this: As noted on this wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_Antillean_guilder#Coins "From 1952, the name "Nederlandse Antillen" appeared on the coins." So if my coin was from the Antilles it wouldn't say so anyway. So how can I distinguish the origin of this coin?
That coin design was used for several Dutch coins. Yours will be the one issued in the (European) Netherlands between 1913 and 1940, with the text "Koningrijk der Nederlanden" on the obverse. http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/img5/130-153.jpg Later, Curaçao used it in 1948 ("Munt van Curaçao"); when the Netherlands Antilles were set up, they used it 1957-70 ("Nederlandse Antillen"). The first one should be the piece (well, type) that the original poster has. The second one is a zinc coin from the German occupation. Well, the Netherlands Antilles and their coinage will be history in a few months. But Aruba http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/bg/Aruba.jpg , another autonomous part of the kingdom and roughly in the same geographic area, also issues square pieces ... Christian
