Always thought Hacksilver was an interesting concept. Sort of a sad decline from the glory days of high quality imperial coinage, to "chopping up random bits of silver for money"
How can we distinguish Hacksilver from just normal old broken silver? Not casting doubt--just curious.
Way cool, @galba68 ... great find. I only have one hacksilber... Israelite AR 2 Gerah Hacksilber ca 8th-6th C. BCE 8.8x10mm 1.12g ex David Hendin RARE
It's pretty much the same thing. I guess most hacksilver was broken up deliberately to be used in trade, but it's basically just busted pieces of silver.
