I bought a handful of Jefferson nickels today for 7.5 cents each. Attached are a couple of pictures of a handful of them. No idea of the value here but for 7.5 cents I couldn’t resist. Question on the ‘51-D, it looks like there’s a flat spot on the face but the reverse shows no damage or die adjustment issues. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks for looking.
Hey Joe ! Very Nice Nickels ! I just am not seeing what your talking about ???Can you explain it better ?
Yup, that’s it. I would have said due adjustment strike or thin planchet but the reverse is fully struck. That makes me think PMD or wear but I can’t image how you PMD the obverse in the center of the coin with affecting the reverse at least to some degree. And thanks Sal. I know they’re not big money coins or even small money coins but I still think they’re nice.
Kinda hard to go wrong at that price! You've got some nice lustrous pieces, and that one '53 has some pretty toning. Might be a touch of damage on the '51-D, but I don't know for sure.
As Frank said, it is likely just struck through grease. The bigger revelation here is that someone sold you a handful of gem grade Jefferson Nickels for 7.5 cents each when they are worth easily $5+ each, especially the 1953 with the the rainbow toning.
Don't leave those beauties out, put them in 2x2's or slabs. You definitely have some winners there, such a good deal. Thanks for sharing them.
Could possibly be from a planchet that was not the proper thickness in the center (thin) and when struck there was not enough material to fill the die.
Thanks everyone. I felt great about the deal obviously. And the little old lady I bought them from seemed happy. Kidding. I bought them from a dealer. I have 30 total that are similar to those posted. I guess I’ll 2x2 a few of them and throw the rest in a tube. The ‘51-D weighs 4.99g so really right on. thanks again.
