In doing some research, I came across the citations for two articles that I would like to read, but I have no luck locating digital copies. I did locate a printed copy of the first, but it is being sold as a set for $25, and it seems impractical to spend that much for a single article that is only eight pages long. I checked NNP for both, but the search function is next to useless, and the only two Coin and Bulletin volumes they have for 1972 are not the correct issue. Does anyone have a copy or a source for a copy of either of these articles? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Brian Gould (1972) Noel-Alexandre Ponthon: Medallist and Minaturist (1769/70-1835) Seaby’s Coin and Medal Bulletin 1972 Seaby London pp 312-319 Brian Gould (1969) Monsieur Duret: Craftsman at Soho Numismatic Circular September 1969 Volume LXXVII Number 9 p 278.
It is actually pretty unusual to be find digital copies of most coin magazines and publications because they are all covered by copyright protection. That said, sometimes you can purchase printed copies as you mentioned. But as you also mentioned they are also often expensive. So if you want them, you typically have to pay up for them or do without. And yeah, I realize that in this day and age a lot folks think everything is available someplace online for free. But reality is it simply isn't. There is way, way more that is not available online than there is available online ! I've often had to pay hundreds of dollars for certain numismatic books because that is the only way there is to gain access to the information they contain.
@GDJMSP Your point is well taken, and generally speaking, I agree. I am also no stranger to paying hundreds of dollars for numismatic books. My reference library spans well over five centuries worth of printed material. In this instance, the two items I seek are periodicals that are often digitized, but I just happened to stumble upon a volume that has not made its way online yet. I have no issue paying for hard-to-find books or related material, but in this case, the two items I seek are not particularly rare, and it would be wasteful for me to add an entire set at any cost. Not to mention my wife might be less than happy if yet another box shows up at the door!
it's going to be a struggle to find it. As far as Seaby's, they sell a book with the complete year by date (12 issues) and then there are the monthly issues that were released. I believe the reference is from the yearly issue, not a monthly issue or they would have indicated by month. Brian Gould (1972) Noel-Alexandre Ponthon: Medallist and Minaturist (1769/70-1835) Seaby’s Coin and Medal Bulletin 1972 Seaby London pp 312-319 the page number range, and I could be way off, but the issues are like 60 pages, so you'd likely be looking at June or July maybe August issue, which might be easier to come across looking for them individually in periodicals at your library. The other one is actually called "Spink & Son" Numismatic Circular, it's another obscure numismatic periodical out of London also, and won't be easy to track down. harder in fact than Seaby's. My guess is this reference is another annual compilation of the monthly issues. I could point you at some wrong things, Like this:https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/publisherdetail/528776?Year=1972&displayAmt=50 Seaby's Feb and April Issues from 1972 as well as other years. but that's all I got to work with. you are welcome to dig through that website, the Newman Numismatic Portal at Washington University in St. Louis. Maybe there's a crumb or two in there somewhere without needing to go to a library and scouring periodicals which may come up empty since both are London periodicals. pretty sad when I can search your references and find where you got them from but not much luck finding the the writings referenced...LOL
The ANA has a library and you can send a request to the Research Services to see what they have. They do charge for it, but it may get you what you need. You also might be able to “check out” a book by mail if they have it, but I’m not too sure how that works. You may need to be an ANA member to access these services. I put in a request for an article in a 50 year old coin world and they had it, no problem sending me a digital copy, but mine was easier than it sounds like yours might be. Good luck.
@John Burgess thank you for your thoughtful reply. I was unaware of the annual issues, so that should be helpful in my search. I looked through the NNP before posting here but had no luck. A member of a different forum suggested an ILL request which is a viable option. @Lev99 also made a good suggestion. I am an ANA member, and from what I remember, they started offering service again earlier this year. I may reach out to them first. I appreciate your help.
