Hi all! I just bought a small lot of coins on eBay, and am having my suspicions (not a big deal though, as it cost £10 for the lot). One is definitely fake (and says replica on it in a fun way). Why anyone would fake an LRB, I have no idea... But most of the other coins look in poor condition, but genuine. However, I'm not sure about this Roman Republican Denarius. I have no expertise in this area, so don't know if it's genuine or not. It weighs 3.10g, and is 18mm in diameter. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
It's on the light side for Republican denarius. If what I see at 5 o'clock is a fleck of silver on the reverse it may be a fourree with most of its silver long gone. Had i seen it at a show I would have passed on it.
I would also consider the RR a fourree. You can't go very wrong with £10 but ... are the coins identifiable? The "LRB" is interesting - reverse would read Replica 1965. Never seen something like this, probably from a museum or a coin shop
Interesting lot - looks like a Nero AE in the group photo (bottom right corner). As to the Roman Republic denarius, I'd expertly agree it is probably a fourree, given its weight and appearance. As for type, it looks like this one: Roman Republic Denarius M. Porcius Laeca (125 B.C.) Rome Mint Helmeted head of Roma right, LAECA behind, X below chin / Libertas in quadriga, crowned by Victory, M POR ROMA below. Crawford 270/1; Sydenham 513; Porcia 3. (3.83 grams / 19 mm) eBay Sep. 2013
Man, those coins are shot. I actually like the replica better than the rest. As for the denarius, looks alright to me. Likely fourree as other poster mentioned.
Agreed. Thought the same. Here is my LAECA: RR Porcius Laeca 125 BCE AR Den Roma - Libertas in Quadriga holding pileus and rod crowned by Victory flying S 146 Cr 270-1
