...Man..talk about getting your feet wet, buying coins of these guys makes me feel like a novice(which, buying coins of these guys, i am)..i got this one in tonight and have already bought another Sunday morning (i'll post it whens i gets it). now i have 3 of the 5(most every ancient collector has at least one, Sept. Severus). now if i can stop symmetrically buying 2(or more) of the same emperor, maybe i can get the other 2 emperors of 193 i lack ...this now becomes the most expensive coin in my collection(so far).....my reasoning...i'm old and gettin' older ya only live once POST YER COINS N COMMENTS PEEPS! Pertinax denarius,(Dec.31,192, March 28,193AD) Obv: emperors laureate bust right; IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG, Rev: Latitia standing left holding wreath and scepter; LATITIA TEMPOR COS II, 18mm, 2.72gms. Rome mint Ref. RIC 4a
Killer! Great coin, congrats, @ominus1 ! PERTINAX Roman Empire - Pertinax (193 A.D.) AE sestertius. Rome mint, 19,60 grs. 28 mm Obv: LAETITIA TEMPORVM COS II. IMP (CAES P HELV - PERTINAX AVG) Head, laureate, to right.. Rev: LAETITIA TE -MPORVM COS II / S - C Laetitia standing l. holding wreath and sceptre. Ref: RIC 17. C. 21
Only recognized as a separate mint issue about 30 years ago, there are some rather nice denarii of Pertinax from Alexandria. They are distinguished by style and seem to be as common as the ones from Rome. It is just a matter of taste but I prefer the Alexandrian style denarii. As usual with coins from this mint, Pertinax is shown with a rather protruding eye. A surprisingly high percentage of these are correctly identified by larger dealers. PROVID DEOR COS II Providentia standing left OPI DIVIN TRP COS II Ops seated left - This is the more popular type since it does double duty showing Ops (wealth) who appears on very few Roman coins. Antoninus Pius has some but the Pertinax is easier to find.
..wow...i am glad to hear this!...the other one i bought Sunday had the eye protruding thing goin' on and i haven't been comfortable since with that in the back of my mind...whew!..thanks Doug!
Here's all the Pertinax coins I've ever owned, crammed into a single post. Ready? Zilch. Zip. Nada. But hey, congrats! The Years of 4/5/6 are probably the most fascinating periods of Roman history to me. I did the Year of Four Emperors in the course of completing a Twelve Caesars collection. Not sure I could complete the Year of Five or Year of Six on my budget.
Cool coin with a distinctive portrait to it, congrats My own example (from HJB years ago) Pertinax, Denarius - Rome mint, AD 193 IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG, laureate head right VOT DECEN TR P COS II, emperor sacrificing left, with patera held over tripod altar 2.98 gr, 17 mm Ref : RIC # 13a, Cohen # 56, RCV # 6048 Ex Harlan J. Big CONGRATS!!! Pertinax is one of my favorite "what could have beens". Thanks to the greedy Praetorian guard we'll never know.
..right...but what we do know is that the crisis didn't start until they killed him and brought on the 5 year civil war
Still don't have a coin of this ruler but to be honest I haven't really been looking for one so far. But I also need a Didius Julianus.
Nice one! My Pertinax needs an upgrade, but at least it wasn't too hard on the wallet I did manage to complete the (almost) full Year of 5, missing only Pertinax Jr and Titiana (ha!) last year when I finally nabbed a Pescennius Niger - all but the Niger were actually minted in 193.
