What is the most you ever spent on a coin? On ONE coin, the most I ever spent is $500 I think, though I've spent more than that on multiple coins from the same buyer. What did I get for $500? A details 1921 SLQ that I was sure was at least EF40-45 and I hoped would straight grade for my TPG set of SLQs [sad trombone] (weak reverse knocked it down - check the right/forward feathers on the eagle wing, the lesson I learned is that any weak points on a coin will knock it down from the strong and obvious points) -
about $99 with shipping but from what i have seen the coin has a value of $105 according to the PCGS price guide
A gem grade Peace Dollar and a higher grade Good Indian. Each one cost well over 4 figures and I still have them.
My current most expensive coin. An 1892cc MS 62 PL PCGS. Was solid 4 figures, as that date is uncommon in PL.
It was my lifelong bucket list coin. It was a deal but I still felt very selfish dropping mid-four figures for it.
About $1800 for a raw 1798 Heraldic Dollar that graded PCGS VF20 some 10-12 years ago...eventually sent/sold at a Heritage auction with a bunch of other slabs.
I think it was like, $79.00 + Shipping for this. That is my most expensive single coin. I try to buy silver coins as an investment in silver. I buy silver in the form of coins because a silver coin could have the advantage of having a numismatic value greater than the silver value. I think this coin does.
I think my two priciest coin purchases were both cherrypicks - PCGS MS67 1942 WL Half with an unattributed DDR, and a PCGS MS64 1875 Seated Quarter with an unattributed misplaced date. Most expensive coin I still own - does a 10-coin BU roll of Panamanian 20 Balboas count as one coin? Otherwise, it's probably my 1879 Proof Seated Dime:
My most expensive coin (I no longer own it) was something of a disappointment. I had somehow got fixated on owning a 1872 S dollar. The mintage is low, (9,000), yet the ratio of mintage to catalog price seemed like a good buy to me. I don't remember the exact grade, VF something I think, but when a well known dealer listed a certified example, I splurged and paid $1300 dollars. When the coin arrived I knew right away that it had kind of a cleaned look....I never did like the coin and eventually sold it. So it goes sometimes....definitely best to examine an expensive purchase in hand before buying.
I paid $1,490 for a 2015 W high relieve gold American Liberty. It is really a sharp coin; the eagle on the reverse really pops out.
