1872-S below bow Mintage: 837,000 NGC Pop: 820 NGC Details Pop: 74 PCGS Pop: 1,060 Here is a really neat half dime I sent in to be graded for my registry set. I have not had good luck sending dimes. (And no, what looks like original toning doesn't automatically save you.) From what I can tell this one does have luster that rolls through the toning on both sides. The details are fantastic. This is part of the reason why I love the US type set. It makes you look at other areas you wouldn't normally pay attention to. This one comes in two varieties. S below the bow or above the bow. No particular reason given as to why they did this, but PCGS claims the S below is roughly 3.5x more common than above the bow versions. Less than 2k graded. Hard telling how many of these are still in existence in any condition.
I'm going MS 62 here too...looks nice but I also see an outside shot of details cleaned (cleaned then retoned)
It's a beautiful coin! I think I detect some rubs on the high points. It's hard to zoom in with any detail and the toning hides a lot. I'm going to guess AU58 CAC.
with the small image and all the toning it's hard for me to say, without seeing it in hand. my guess 62
I don't see why it wouldn't grade. It's kind of hard to see due to the heaviness of the toning. I went with AU58 to be conservative, but MS62 would not surprise me.
Wish I could expand the photos to see more details. I think the toning will help you on the grading, for sure. I agree with lordmarcovan (AU 58, but MS 62 would be no surprise).
Too hard to see much with those photos, so won't even attempt it. Hope the outcome is as good, or better, than you hope.
I downloaded the photos so I could blow them up to try to see the coin better, but the photos are poorly lit and out of focus. Nevertheless, I am giving the coin the benefit of the doubt and saying that it will straight-grade at 63. I can't see any rub from these photos and I just don't see the toning as anything but original. Again, I am giving the coin the BOD due to poor photos. But I do like the look of the thing!
