And we round out the sub with part 5 of 5. Please guess the original grade and the new grade (originally NGC and now PCGS). Are they the same or different? Here I am including two photos (first the NGC photo from the seller and then the PCGS TrueView).
MS63 to MS 64 (1st set of photos more clearly show bag marks on cheek and obverse fields), ergo MS 63 initially. Graders have to love the toning/color, so my guess is that when they graded it again, they said "Give it a 64" for maxing coloration and eye appeal grading element, notwithstanding the bag marks.
Questionable color, MS details to 63. Went from details to straight grade change. It looks like a 63 to me. I would not be surprised if it was not detailed originally, as I have seen many Morgans with ring toning considered questionable. To me, it looks NT, but my bet was that NGC saw it as QT.
I'll go with 63 to 64. The TrueView photos don't show all of the contact marks that the other images show. I find this a bit concerning since it definitely makes the coin look better. That said, the TrueView images seem to bring out the beautiful toning better.
That has been one of my gripes with TrueViews for a while now. For reference, see these threads from 2018: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/guess-the-grade-on-this-colorful-morgan.322361/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/head-to-head-gtg-who-will-be-the-victor.322362/
All Morgan's are keepers. 64, 65, could be just the opposite because of the line across the date on the second set. Great post, can't wait to see the result. Thanks
I think PCGS knocked it up a point. They like toning like this, and while I'm not a big fan of toned coins, that one appeals to me.
This was a pleasant surprise and the biggest win on the PCGS sub. It upgraded from NGC MS 64 (no star) to PCGS MS 65. I think the technical grade is a 64 and was not expecting an upgrade to 65 (part 1 of 5 is where I expected the upgrade from 64 to 65). The reason for submitting it was to get it into a PCGS holder with a TrueView as that would increase the market value (the no star NGC holder would have held back the potential value). For now this is a coin that will stay in my collection (unless something better comes along to unseat it).
