This coin has bothered me for many years. It is a restoration type as by Nerva who came to power 82 years after Augustus died. Three nail holes make me want to think of a decoration for, perhaps, a casket of a veteran of Augustus' army but a ten year old water boy in Augustus' last year would have been over 90 which is possible but not likely. What other use would require three holes arranged to do as little damage as possible? Obviously I will never know the true and complete story.

An interesting historical tidbit is that August 19th is also the date, in 43 BCE, that Octavian was elected consul along with his relative Quintus Pedius as co-consul by the Roman Senate.

Out of some others I can show a seldom seen denarius and the dead man on a bronze

This is my most unusual portrait of Augustus - indeed
it may not be him at all, but his grandson Gaius Caesar

thanks for the write up @Ocatarinetabellatchitchix. And that marble shield is a great piece of history I have not seen before. I really enjoy the coinage of the Julio Claudian dynasty, but they are sought after and quite expensive generally speaking. I have a few of Octavian, and Augustus, but do not have a moneyer issue. I do have a fourth type, the honouring type struck after his death by another emperor. Here are all put togheter:

    Octavian:

We remember Augustus two thousand years later. The Roman remembered him frequently under Tiberius and occasionally thereafter. Here is a page with a few commemoratives:

    http://augustuscoins.com/ed/types/DIVVS.html

One of my favorites on the page is this one:
    Augustus3dupDIVVSPROVIDENT.jpeg

    As. 28 mm. 9.95 grams.
    Struck c. 22/23 - 30 under Tiberius.
    DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER
    Radiate head of Augustus left
    Altar enclosure with double-paneled door,
large "S C" on either side.
    PROVIDENT below.
Lovely red patina. (On my screen the color is true.)
    RIC 81, page 99.
    Sear I 1789.

I'm home now. All my images are on a hard drive on my PC. Okay, I know this is very old fashion, but at least I am not using a wax cylinder anymore, and I do have a land line, a vast improvement and upgrade over my previous setup of two coffee cans connected by a string, so, I'm getting there, technology-wise.

Here's my lone coin with Augustus on the obverse, shared with Agrippa, with a chained croc on the reverse.

Agreed. Sometimes I sit down in my favorite armchair with a beer and admire coins showed in a thread: It really feels like I'm visiting a MUSEUM !

Welcome to Shogun's wing of the museum. Here you'll find early copper As of Augustus from Rome, Spain and Lugdunum.

Not sure if it shows but I love this type, before knowing what an imperial coin was I would think of the denarius and these coppers. I would love to have a list of transactions these coins were involved in, from bread to wine to leisure these are the workers that facilitated the economic machine that was the Roman Empire:

I'm afraid I don't have much to show here. I would love to have more Imperial denarii and other coins of Augustus (including some from when he was Octavian), but they all seem to be remarkably expensive in decent condition, especially the Octavians. The one affordable denarius type I see all the time is the Gaius-Lucius type, which for whatever reason is much more common than any other.
