The sets I am working on are as follows: Magnificent Mercury’s- Mercury Dimes Rocky Roosies- Roosevelt Dimes (1946-1964) The Glorious George Washington Quarters- Silver Washington Quarters (1932-1964) Those Attractive Old Commemoratives- Old Commemorative Type Set The Snow White Franklins- Franklin Halves The Marvelous Morgans & The Marvelous Morgans Date Set- Morgan Silver Dollars The Snow White Peace Dollars- Peace Dollars The Snow White Eagles- American Silver Eagles Uncirculated I use the NGC registry, because I can include NGC & PCGS graded coins. The phrases in bold above are the titles of my sets. I should point out that I like big adjectives to describe things, so my magnificent mercuries or Glorious George Washingtons may not be 68's or 69's, or some even 67's, but the ones I have are magnificent or glorious in my eyes. The Snow White sets are sets that only include Blast White coins. Some have told me in the past that I have too many sets. I agree that it is typically good to focus on one or two sets, but in my case, I would get board out of my mind. I am not so much using the NGC registry to be competitive, but just to keep track of my coins. Another reason why I dont focus on 1 or 2 sets is because I like having a lot of nice coins and knowing and researching each series that I collect. I do intend to complete my sets though, granted that I see the right coins in order to do so. I am not going to add anymore series to my collection until I start completing some of the series that I am currently working on. Here are some of the series that I want to collect in the future: Walking Liberty Halves Standing Liberty Quarters $1 Gold - Large Indian Princess $2.5 Gold - Indian Head Proof Roosevelt Dimes (1946-1964) Barber Dimes Three Cent- Silver Proof Washington Quarters (1932-1964) And finally, I have a Signature Set, called Bustin' Blues. Blue is my favorite color, and I love the way it looks on certain coins. I only have one coin in this set, which is my avatar picture. LouieLot BTW if you are going to look up these sets, I dont have any coins in my Roosie, Peace, or Commemorative set. I have a commemorative I am sending to NGC this week. And I haven't found the right Peace or Roosie to kick off those sets, even though I intend to. I am also working on getting pictures for all my graded coins, so 75% of the coins in my sets don't have pictures yet.
Those are some nice looking Mercs you have. I've been itching to start a registry set myself, but I suppose that would require getting some slabbed coins first Best of luck on your hunt, they all look like they are coming along nicely!
Well I don't do registry sets, but here are some of my sets and I am not sure some of the coins I have will ever become sets. No order of importance should be assumed: (1) Large Cents - Dansco album - down to about 15 needed, but at least 5 will never go into the album. (2) IHC's - need only 1 to complete the graded set, but decided I need to upgrade 1. (3) Bust Halves - date set various grades. Probably need to get me an album. All caped bust dates done from 1808 to 1836, except the 1815/2. (4) Liberty Nickels - 2 pages in the dansco, probably 15 coins to complete both pages. Only the 1884 and 1886 will be in the AG/G range. (5) Dansco album of IHC's. Not sure how many coins it needs, but not many. (6) Shield nickels - need one for a date set(imagine only 1877). Some graded, some raw. Also trying to find at least one DDO for each date available. (7) Graded red book set of Middle Date large cents - instead of the 48 listed will probably only include 45 coins. Eliminated(so far) 1823 restrike, 1834 N-5 and 1839/6. But who knows when all is said and done. Have 16 coins need 29. I have lots of odds and ends that will probably not become sets - again who knows. Do I have too many - probably, but it keeps me always looking. And I expect to be looking for quiet a while for some. And on IHC's I do not include the 1856 as part of the set. My dealer keeps expecting me to do a Morgan set and while I like them - there just seem to be so many of them.
My favorite coin is this one, (Photo Credit goes to Lehigh96) I am still learning to take better photos, but my online photo album is here. http://picasaweb.google.com/louielot/Coins#
You did pretty well with that image of the 45-D Merc. I have a LOT of trouble imaging coins with luster and proofs. My camera is fine but I haven't figured out the lighting yet. As for your sets: - my Mercs are an Unc Short Set (1941-1945) and some of the keys (circulated). - my silver Roosevelts are complete and slabbed NGC or PCGS. The business strikes are all MS-66 and the proofs all PF-67 - I have all the other sets completed but raw except the keys and semi-keys are slabbed (no 1996-W ASE)
No such thing as to many sets of coins. I have well over 100 Whitman Albums and mostly all full. I do not do registry sets though and have no slabbed coins at all. I've purchased some but always break them out for the Albums. I get most of my Albums free so every time I get one I start another collection of whatever it is for. I too like Mercury Dimes and presently have 12 full sets of them. All in order of highest grade, set #1, to lowest grade, set #12. From all the duplicates in 2x2's, if I get another Album, I might start another set of them. The only way you could have to many sets is if you have all the coins ever made. That's my goal.
Your post just gave me an interesting idea. I have a complete sete of Mercury dimes except for the 1916-D and the 1942-D 2 over 1. Most of these coins average at Fine. I got many of these coins from e-bay and there's little doubt that most of them have probably been cleaned. I have been thinking of starting to "upgrade" this album after it is completed... but since it seems as if some people have multiple albums, I might just start a whole new album with higher graded, uncleaned Mercury Dimes. Thanks for the idea! :hail:
Collect what you like, can never have to many. I collect halves. I have one from every date and mintmark from 1892 to 1964. I have no interest in clads. I need three to complete my old commemoratives set. Hawaii, Spanish Trail and Hudson. Guess I have to come up with $5000 to complete. Going to be awhile. Got a New Rochelle at the Whitman show in Baltimore so I'm finally getting close. I collect Bust and Seated halfs also, no where near a set. But I keep searching for dates I don't have. Whatever you're interested in, collect. The fun is in the finding.
My philosophy and collecting style is different. I wouldn't want to start a second set until the first is complete. If I'm saving up to buy a $1000 coin to finish my set I don't want to buy twenty $50 coins at the same time. At that rate I'll never get enough money saved for that key.
For one thing it is fun at first as you get a coin better than in set #1. So you then place the new one in set #1 and move the one from #1 to #2. Eventually, if you get like me, you spend a real lot of time moving coins from set #1 to #2, #2 to #3 and on and on and on. By the time I get to #11, I start wondering why not just go watch TV or something. Although, when you open #1, it is really a great feeling to see all those really nice ones all in one set. However, the down side is never to compare #1 to #12 or that last one will make you really irritated. I've found it easier to work multiple sets than to attempt filling just one. Of course you go around with a sheet of paper listing what is required for many sets of the same coin. Still waiting to fill one set alone is depressing to me if there is always those last expensive ones just not there. As to your cleaned coins. I too have purchased cleaned coins in the past. If they are obviously cleaned looking and you are irritated with that, try the following. Place that coin on a closed kitchen window sill on the inside of course. You'll have to leave it there for a few months pending the usage of the kitchen. Turn it over every few weeks. If your using your kitchen normally, fumes from the cooking will slowly tone down the cleaning looks of most coins. Enough to place in an album.
I have to agree. My sets are....well, just page through the Red Book, thats my list of sets going. No registry sets, though someday I may have to throw my graded type set on there for kicks. Guy~
