OK here is my question. I would like to collect the 2009 cents slabbed. I was wondering if the proof 69,s (which are more in my price range) are worth the money to pick up. The proof 70,s are fairly steep as they will surely go up in value in years to come and many collectors buy only 70,s. I was just trying to figure out why the price gap between the slabbed 69,s is so substantial to the 70,s even in the top companies as NGC.
There could be a number of factors. Population is likely a concern (though I have no way of checking pop. #s at the moment), it could be that PR-70s are rarer, or are perceived to be rarer than lower graded proofs. Then there is the simple fact of supply and demand. A PR-70 is for, all intents and purposes, a perfect coin. Who doesn't want one of those? People will clamor for them, and the more people scramble to get an item in limited quantities, the higher the price goes, and it goes as far as people are willing to pay. As for whether or not a PR-69 is worth the money, that is entirely up to you. If you are happy with a coin and the way it looks, regardless of grade or slab, it's probably worth it. If you're not happy with it, it won't be.
Good points INSOMNIAC. I try to collect for the fun of it and I buy only the coins i like. The slab world is new to me but i hope to get some nice ones on my modest budget.:smile
Personally I would stick with 69's. I am not good enough to tell the difference between 69's and 70's. Plus I just do not think 70's are worth the premium. I also expect the population of 70's to keep growing. As it stands I think 69's are a good compromise - a nice affordable coin. Just my humble opinion.
The reason behind the difference is because many of the cents in the proof sets should grade a ms69. Unless you are buying them to turn over for a quick profit, I would buy a proof set. Look at the cents carefully before you buy. Don't pay the premium for the slabs. I have a feeling alot of the modern graded slabs will be big losers before all is said and done. If you love the coins for the look, buy the set-not the slab. Lack .
