FWIW, I think it is not worth your time. However, the box is secondary to what you wish to discover. Open the box. If it is a true unopened box that has not been re-sealed, then the contents will be in a secondary package. It will not be hard to ascertain if it has or has not been tampered with. The exterior box is heat sealed with an FDA approved adhesive. The interior bag is usually a clear waterproof plastic bag that is again heat sealed, to prevent humidity. The exterior box used a hot melt system.

    Good luck.

A good metal detector could tell the difference. If it can ID a coin in the ground, it could ID one in cereal.

It would be impossible to detect if it is a Cheerios dollar.

No not by weight. Open the box. any weight will be inconclusive due to the gram variances of the cereal and weight at time of packing as well as likely weight loss after 20 years of it going stale and drying out more.

What are you gonna do, keep a box of cheerios for 40 years, find one day that rats or bugs tore through it and the coins packaging? LOL

The box of cheerios has no real worth, it's surely stale 20 years later, you can open it, take out the cereal and coin and re-close the box for a display if you like. the worth comes in the "unopened box" or "unopened bank roll" routine that preys on people's desire to take a gamble.

My guess is the seller opened the box and re-closed it. an xray should show the metal, whether it's one small cent of the cent and the dollar coin, but you'd really need to know someone that does xrays and willing to play around for free, because xrays aren't cheap.

it was 10 million cents, 5,500 dollars. every 4,400th box contained a certificate redeemable for 100 Golden Dollars (which is probably long expired and no longer valid) In all likelihood it's going to be just a cent in there. 10 million boxes of cents, 7773 chances to find a prize better than a cent. 1 better prize per 1,287 boxes roughly.

Maybe you could sell the box blind for $200. it's most likely got a cent in it and someone went through the trouble to find out the hard way, or,,,, carefully checked and re-glued it shut. Heck in 20 years, the OM glue should have released on it's own, just being real about it.

I'm no expert but we have many who are with metal detecting...wouldn't a metal detector pick up in a coin in the box...? No need to x-ray by the conventional method/machine. Maybe even a detector could determine the size or composite size of the "metal" relative to various coins to ID if a penny, dollar or both...? Dunno...just asking.

add-on: Sorry if that Q has been asked...didn't see it...don't always read all the previous posts in RE-POSTS and don't notice the small, light-font fine-print dates or when post dates change from 2008 to 2021.

I have 5 or 6 of the pennies from boxes back then...my kids and I liked to find them back then...all are in their unopened, un-bent cards and with totally new-like RED obverse color...no fading or toning detectable. I'm thinking the $10 price someone mentioned seeing for sale was quite low. Think I've seen considerably higher listed or estimated values ($50+ and more if slabbed and higher grades), though can't recall where, if in OGP or TPG slabs, etc.

Obverse appears to have the die polish marker.

While this is a 13 year old post, I think the OP did a search of Cheerios and found the old post, so posted.
@Richard Famiglietti, you may wish to start your own post, say in the "Coin Chat" forum and get more feed back.
I think the metal detector is the best bet, if you don't wish to open the box for fear of the Pandora effect, otherwise take it to the airport and let them run it through the machine and tell you what they see. Like some others have posted, open the darned box and remove the coin. Good luck and Welcome to CT.

Yep, did mention it earlier, any decent metal detector would easily differentiate between a cent and a dollar. In fact I would guess it has already been checked at some point!

I vote open the box but leave the coin in the package that is inside the box. If it is the cent it will be worth only 1 cent if you do take it out. It will look something like this one. Polish_20210110_191119183~2.jpg

I'd like to add to this thread for informational purposes, as of yet not a single 2000 cent "Wide AM"variety has been graded from the cheerios cents yet. So it's highly unlikely it happened when these were made and packed up and happened later in the year at some point instead.

And as Cheech said, if you remove the coin from the card it's on or open that plastic it won't be attributed by a grading company as being a cheerios cent, so it's no longer a "cheerios cent" it's just one of 5.5 billion+ other 2000P cents.

I came across 7 of the dollar coins in original packaging and only 1 of them had the enhanced tail feather. I was surprised to find so many without the enhanced tail feather. If the original poster still has the box it came in they might be able to guess what coin they have based on the BIUB date in the cereal box. The further from the launch date of the promotion the less likely it would be to have the enhanced coin.

I sold one in 2016 for $6k. Hoping for more with my next one.
