Hey gents, a friend recommended I put these pics up here and see if anyone knows what this thing is. I found it in a dumpster post Katrina, it was mixed in with a bunch of stuf that had belonged to a Soviet soldier, he wasn't a front line guy he was some kind of Soviet military band leader had lots of musical pins and parade ribbons and stuff, anyway the two coins have some kind of tinned backing and the two were stuck together with some kind of glue patch. I wouldn't have thought anything about them but one was dated 1796 that got my attention. If anyone has a clue tell me what the heck this thing is I have no illusions that its valuable just curious what the heck it is. Thanks in advance nice, forum yall have here.
The coin is an electrotype copy of a Spanish 8 Reale of 1795 with a British counterstamp dating from 1797. A real coin in that condition would be worth around $600. It seems that you own a replica: the obverse and reverse made independently of each other to prevent it being sold as the genuine article.
It might be worth $5-10, as some collectors use these electrotypes to temporarily fill gaps in their collection. Really high quality electrotypes can sell for considerably more.
