yawn, was a boring day today so I decided to watch the live bidding at FUN on heritage today <mistake>... Observations:
1 - There was very little bidding action from the floor, which made me think that everyone there was letting the internet community purchase wildly overpriced coins that have absolutely no investment attributes, or are very down on the economy and simply not buying....
2 - From what i saw, with buyer premium, most coins sold way over gray sheet... maybe more toward PCGS price guide retail than anything... (maybe that's why no floor bidding?)... just to high?
3 - on a boring day, never, never ever, watch a heritage live auction,, they make it way to damb easy to press that little easy button.... that said.. here we go... please feel free to call me names and make fun as appropriate... (yes, I happy as a collector, so please no "well if you enjoy them".. crap).. only investment and value of purchase vs. dollars cost please..
    ...alway's wanted a MS67 walker,, but damb !$
    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=8316
... ok toner freaks,, was this worth the premium ?
    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=8345
...what the fu*& is graffiti ?.. and omg what a dog.. lol... but I don't have one and need a sample for id'ing fakes.. so wtf,, maybe a couple hours in the over in a wet envelope will help it ?
    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=8463

OK,, bring it ye dealers out there... sling the snot and give me both barrels for my fiscal stupidity ?.. maybe that'll keep me off the damb computer tomorrow....!! please hurry....

I really wanted to get some of the lincoln's, but they all went high.... the late memorials were waaaay over price guides,, almost 5-8x in most cases.. crazy... I think Penny Lady is down there bidding everything up :smile

I have a couple of items that iam bidding on and one that got away!
The reason for that was Heritages over the top estimate, Simply put
I didnt think i can afford to bid on it and have a reasonable chance to
Win, Come to find out the note sold for 50% less of there estimate!!

    Just a little ticked off!!

I love to watch the bid-idiots at auctions. I recently saw a 1864LM 2 cent pc. in VG cond. sell for $60. A 1967 SMS sold for $42. Alot of these are bought as gifts, but I would love to see the faces of the buyers when they find out the true value...

Graffiti is the stuff that somebody scratched into the obverse fields ... I didn't look at the reverse.

    You must be a swinger--swung from hi-grade walkers to a lo-grade damaged seated $.

Buy what you like. We have different likes.

Well, one thing to keep in mind is a lot of dealers and collectors who have looked at the lots in person are bidding online these days.

I bid on several of the FUN Heritage lots, but was outbid on them all. I also make sure to disable the live bid button when my lots are not up as it is way too easy to click it by mistake... it has happened before!!!!!! Ouch!!!

I did not even make it to the live bidding before I got way out priced. I keep hearing the the coin market is dropping, but I am not seeing it in Lincolns

I was actively bidding in several areas and the only relatively weak areas I saw were in some Indian Cents and some Barber coins, and even then the prices weren't really dropping, they just were rocketing up... everything else seemed to be on fire though.

    bahabully -

Session 6 (Saturday) and Session 7 (Sunday) do not allow floor or phone bidding. So, what you are seeing are internet, fax, or mail bid activity.

Yeah,, those are what I was eyeballing too.... but everything bid out of sight. Either some folks are artificially floating this market, or the economy blahs haven't hit FUN,, that's for sure.

    - So, how much would you have gone ?

I bet it would look fantastic next to the one on your avatar.... I've alway's liked blast white coins (for years). All the toning talk has finally bit me, so I figured I'd take a few this year... with the intent of not paying more than 2x premium on any of them..

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=8693

I didn't see too may wild premium's for toners.. with the exception of three.

If prices were high, how could one conclude that the market as a whole is "very down on the economy and simply not buying" ?

Strong coins brought strong money. No surprise. However, there were some very nice buys, I assure you.

Have you ever been in the room at a major coin auction ? It's very different from the Olde Days, when the rooms were packed. In the era of internet bidding, many bids are placed in advance (there are many reasons for this). There are far fewer people in the room for the live bidding.

I've bid live on the floor, but most of my bids are advance via internet.

My max would have been $315, but I have not started collecting this series yet. I am going to in the future, but I will wait until after my franklin halves and washington quarters.

The blue mercury dime I got from another member on this forum, and it has started my signature set if blue toned coins.

I monitored Friday's auction via internet just to see some of the Gold lots. A lot of really beautiful coins there.

On Saturday I was able to pick up three 2 cent pieces that I've been looking for. On one I ended up paying a bit over Numismedia prices but the other two I paid under, ao all in all I think I came out OK.

    Baha,

Regarding your FUN newps, I really like the first walker with the CAC sticker. It may not appear that attractive from the photo, but my guess is it will be much more lustrous in hand, and very attractive as a result. The blue toned walker is another story. As someone who is not stranger to paying premiums for toned coins, I must say I would not pay much above retail for that coin.

I really like your 1883-CC Morgan. I bet that coin is striking in hand. Powder blue, bright gold, and violet over lustrous surfaces, sooo nice. If you didn't see too many wild premiums for toned coins, then you missed the classic commemoratives. I plan on creating a thread tonight that focuses on one particular collection that sold in the FUN sale. These coins and the premiums they generated will knock your socks off! Stay tuned!

Thanks for the feedback Lehigh... I did log off abit into the gold and missed the commemoratives outright... but did see some nice looking one's in there. Looking forward to your write up. Cheers.
