Something about this example just kept me coming back to look at it. I will eventually acquire a better example but will probably keep this one forever. Pretty significant historical value behind this coin. Please post yours if you have one. As always comments welcome!
Are you sure that's the Penny and not the Halfpenny? It looks more like the Halfpenny to me. Either way, nice coin!
It's a Virginia half penny, and it was issued on the eve of the American Revolution. They were authorized by the British crown and are dated 1773. The war probably got in the way of issuing all of them, and a group of them escaped circulation. There is a pretty significant hoard of these known in Mint State. Not show you up too much, but here is one of them. According to The Red Book a hoard of "at least 2,200" were obtained by a Baltimore numismatist, Colonel Mendes I. Cohen. They have been passed through many hands and are one of the few colonial coins that can be obtained in Mint State today.
