This British half penny dated 1886 was found over 25 years ago by a friend of mine on the grounds of the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home in Xenia Ohio. Probably not a rare find except for where it was found. I've often wondered how it could have gotten where it was found. penny 1.jpg penny 2.jpg

Interesting, love things like that. English started arriving 1620 (Mayflower), and that building was commissioned by Abe Lincoln and built in 1870 on land gifted to the GAR. 16 years later, that coin was struck and at some future point lost in the grounds. Who had it and lost it will always be a mystery but it is great food for our fertile imaginations. Thanks for sharing.

Nice coin, and a very interesting history.

My wife spent 13 years there. At some point I will post pictures of the guns that were found on the grounds.

Sometimes the stories behind the actual coin are more interesting than the coin itself. I like the old English coins...have quite a few myself...but yours is special because of the mystery attached to it.

Someone may have had it as a pocket piece.
