Last week I bought a. Lot of 30 proof sets at auction. The 1979 and 1981 sets were marked as type 2 clear S sets. From what I can tell that is true. I would appreciate confirmation from more experienced eyes. Also , I gather that the difference between type 1 and 2 involves when they were made. (Dies changed mid year). So does that mean a set with clear S would contain only clear S coins? From what I see, graded clear S coins can be pretty valuable. If I decide to grade this set, do I send it in as is, or break them out and send individually? will they automatically grade as type 1 or 2 or is that something I request? Thanks in advance for your input!
To be a type 2 set all the coins in the set have to have type 2 mintmarks. They didn't change over all the denominations at the same time so mixed sets are common.
Still buying proof sets? My grandparents bought proof & unc sets from 1979-1997 and I have no idea what to do with them.
I like proofs. I saw a set of 30 in a nearby auction. Paid $100 for them all. They make fun gifts, and I should be able to sell the rest of them thru the antique mall where I rent space. Gifting a co-worker a set from his birth year today. Everybody I have gifted one too has really been happy to get it. Make me an offer I can't refuse LOL~
I see the "clear" S type 1...not the "large "S type 2. The type 2 mintmark has flat surfaces on top and the S is larger. These coins have the small S from 1980...the type 1 variety. The top of the S is pointed on these.
If you own a red book, just look up Sacagawea Dollar...there is a very nice group of pics. It should answer most of your questions as this subject is one of the most misunderstood subjects in modern numismatics.
