1808 CAROLUS IIII - Real or Fake?

    I got this several years ago. It weighs 26.4 gms. I have no idea whether it is real or fake? Could one of you experts advise me one way or the other? Sorry about the bad pictures. Thank you very much.

    Well, it looks good to me . Looks Silver too . Why use silver on a Counterfeit ?

    EXACTLY! It seems to have circulated enough to get worn down to VF-XF and be accepted as real enough to merit (if that’s the right word) being holed & worn. It also convinced the counter-stamper (Mr. Smith?) enough to put his commercial mark on it. Business folk were pretty savvy in those days about real silver. Gettin stung was areal loss.

    Wow! All of you can see the silver content from out-of-focus photos? Amazing!

    First, learn how do a specific gravity test to determine what the silver content actually is.

    Coins with this design were counterfeited for the trade with East Asia with close to the nominal silver because they yielded a decent profit for the counterfeiters.
