I have sorted through hundreds of ancient coins in the past few months - mostly Roman, which I am getting better at identifying. I am left with these 5 - can someone please put me on the right track for any of these? Coin A about 23mm: Coin B about 20mm: Coin C about 18mm: Coin D about 24mm at the longest: Coin E, probably not Greek, 18mm at the longest: Thank you.
Hi Paddy looks like Ptolemy alexander in lionskin I forget which ptol. one off top of my head #2 not sure #3 agree with above #4 antioch syria / seleucis pier. #5 ?
What a diverse grouping! I'll say... Ptolemaic Seleuikid Carthage Back to Seleuikid And round it out with an Eastern coin.
B: Looks like Apollo on the obverse. The reverse figure appears to be wearing female attire and is in a pose suggestive of archery, so probably Artemis. Combining search terms "AE Apollo Artemis" on asearch brings up hundreds of possibilities and of those, I'm liking it for a tetrachalkon of Larissa (in Thessaly). Here's the hit list for a search string "AE Apollo Artemis Larissa". See what you think. https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1¤cy=usd&order=1
Last one I think is upside down, modern, and Arabic. I believe the obverse is some type of gate or door flanked by flags, and under it I'm pretty sure I see 1328 = 1910 AD
Any chance anyone can work out the ruler on Coin D? I have been bending my eyes viewing the letters and trying to match it to any of the Seleucia coins on Wildwinds without success. Thanks,
Probably a pseudo autonomous issue under roman rule: You can read [A]NTIOX[ΕΩN] THΣ [MH]TPOΠOΛ[EΩΣ] AYTONO[MOY] See also the pileus surmounted by star in front of Zeus on the reverse.
