I have quite a few Gallienus coins that I like a lot. I am particularly fond of the one below: IMP CP LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG // LIBERALITAS AVGG Mint: Rome Date: ca. 254-256 RIC 147 Note the lifelike bust with the neckbeard and Gallienus looking up to the sky.
Here's the piece in my emperors set. Antoninianus of Gallienus, Obverse: GALLIENVS AVG “Gallienus augustus.” Reverse: MARS VICTOR “Mars victorious in war.” Mars advancing with a spear and shield . Sear 10286
My example of the centaur, 8th Officina (H), the same type as the one you posted, holding a globe and reversed rudder (there's also a type with a bow and arrow):
GALLIENUS Billon Antoninianus OBVERSE: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate cuirassed bust right REVERSE: LVNA LVCIF, Diana walking right holding torch in both hands, PXV in ex. Struck at Antioch, 260-268 AD 3.8g, 20mm RIC VI 609
Since I collect only Sestertii and larger Roman bronze, the family of Gallienus is a tough task. Valerian: 18.4gm. Father of Gallienus. Became Emperor of Rome in 253. Captured by Shapur of Persia in 260, died in captivity. Mariniana: 14.9gm. Second wife of Valerian. Probable birth-mother of Gallienus. Died in Rome around the time her husband became Emperor in 253. Her sestertii are all postumus. Gallienus: 15.1gm. Became co-Emperor with his father in 253. Became sole Emperor in 260 when his father was captured by Shapur, never to be heard from again. Gallienus reigned for 15 continual-wars years. He was assassinated in 268. Salonina: 16.0gm. Wife of Gallienus. Died in Rome in the purge of Gallienus' remaining family and allies after his assassination in 268. Valerian2: 21.5gm. Oldest son of Gallienus. Was killed in battle or died of Plague in 258 while on campaign in present-day Albania. All sestertii of Valerian2 are postumus and are scarce. Saloninus: 16.8gm. Second son of Gallienus. Captured and executed at age 17 by Postumus in 260. I was outbid at over $8K on the only other (slightly better) one I have seen offered in the past 20 years. This piece is the only sestertius of Saloninus I have seen with the SC on its reverse. If somebody can show/tell me how to post text-pic-text-pic= ... this (and my future posts) will be a whole lot easier to follow.
Great video. I like the way he explained the legends and how the silver content went down in stages (the when and why questions I always had) when I first started collecting I always passed because I loved silver coins, then I learned more about acients and had to add copper/bronze coins to add to the "Total" collection. They are cool to have.
Just received this beautiful Gallienus from Adraa in Arabia: Adraa. Gallienus. AD 253-268. (8.4g , 20mm). Dated CY 151 (AD 256/7). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, gorgoneion on breastplate / Dome-shaped baetyl on altar supported by columns; flight of steps between columns. Spijkerman 17; SNG ANS 1135; Rosenberger 8.
Incredible! Those two will be forever missing in my Sestertius portrait gallery and yours are the finest I have seen since NAC sold the Conte Collection and likely the best anyone on this forum will ever own (99% of us will never touch even a lowest grade example). Sigh...
