Just another Point of View. I won a recent Large Cent for only $11.50 while others were gong for upwards of $100 because of two things. One, the photos were bad and the coin was in less than good condition. Two, the Shipping and Handling was $4.99. This reduced the amount of interest while similar coins with lower or no shipping were being bid up.

Of course it worked for me since the poor old coin was a very scarce S-238. Now all I need is the S-235 and my regular 1802 Sheldon set is complete. I won't talk about the NCs since they are thousands each, even though they are sometimes more available than some of the regular series.

Smart sellers will message the buyer telling them they refunded some shipping costs.

The result: beacoup good will. :)

BNB, you hang in there pard! This thread is informative and educational ( to me at least). I've bought on EBay but never sold. I have some stuff that would probably be best sold there as it hasn't gone too well locally.
    ------
I REALLY liked your attitude about contacting your buyers for a refund when you felt you'd not been right about your method of shipping. Speaks well of you. I'd trade with you based upon that alone as it reflects integrity.
    -----
These other folks have got good points too. Let us both learn from them. They have knowledge and experience and they are gracious enough to share that with us.
    ----
And even if you 'made' 2 cents rather than $2, that is not important. When I was a child and was trying to learn how to ride a bicycle, I wasn't training for the Tour de France, I was just trying to learn how bicycle riding was done. I've never made even one cent on EBay, so you're doing better than me! Keep on, keepin' on pard and good luck!

this is certainly a true statement if you are a collector but not in this case as he is trying to eek a few bucks profit flipping coins, not buying to collect. I have no problem at all paying a few bucks extra for something that catches my fancy (often times shipping bumps me over a bit) but I am not simply buying these coins to try to get someone else to buy them at a slightly higher price.

BNB, might suggest the way others do it? buy a perfectly good naked coin cheap or at a nice reasonable price...get it slabbed in cheap plastic with a number on it (hope the number works out) then hike the price up, the higher the number that guy puts on it the more you hike the price. A sucker will pay it...lots of people sqeeze and extra few bucks off collectors this way.

I agree with this 99.99% of the time....buy what you like, buy what you enjoy.....but then there is that .01% that just spends money blindly, mostly on things they're told to buy.

I think it's utterly ridiculous that some of you are nagging at my $3.99 shipping and handling for my 1 oz 90% silver lots.

Give me a break. Do you not care about me making any profit for myself?

If you see the shipping, it's your choice to bid on the auction.. So give me a break guys, some of you are being a little too hyper critical here and there should be no reason for it.

If I get high negatives because of a few extra bux charged on shipping (For my gas miles and my efforts), then so be it, at least people will understand that there is effort that goes into packing up these coins and taking them down to the post office and to be breaking even on them is NOT on my bottom line. The only reason I e-mailed the last two auction winners about the mistake was because I listed the shipping method as Priority instead of Parcel post. Now that Parcel post is listed, I feel $3.99 is a very fair rate for my efforts.

It's okay for Staples.com to charge absorbant shipping/handling fees but when an ebay seller even tries to throw the handling into the mix, they get chastised for it? puhleease!

BNBs shipping and handling fee of $3.99 wasn't completely outrageous to the point where he could be accused of circumventing eBay fees by charging crazy shipping. If he sent the silver insured w/ tracking, it might even cost him more than that out of pocket. But when BNB discovered that his method of shipping was going to cost him less than a buck and then realized that may result in some bad feedback from the buyers (as expressed by some of us here), he did the right thing by reaching out to the buyers. Not sure why this is still a big deal??

As mentioned before though, I still think it's best to offer free shipping. Buyers are more willing to bid and bid higher if they don't have to factor in shipping costs. Also, my feedback has always been really good as I think it starts the transaction on the right tone by giving them something for free... people like to get things for free and they tend to like people who give them things for free. I don't recall ever getting burned by offering free shipping, but then again most things I'v'e sold are $500-$5000 items too.

You aren't Staples. They have their own fleet of trucks they need to maintain for local deliveries, and I'm QUITE sure Staples has an account with FedEx, or UPS.

    I think you mean exhorbitant.

I can understand gas miles, but your efforts go into selling the coin, if you didn't put any effort into it, it wouldn't be on ebay.

Other than that, I don't think you'll get blasted for $4 shipping, but only if its in a secure bubble envelope (aka shipped well). However, when I'm looking around on ebay, i do tend to look for free shipping lots. It is, in my (a buyer's) eyes, a good strategy. If there's no shipping, you will be able to make the starting bid higher because people will be drawn toward your auction because of no cost for shipping.

Good idea, I'll try starting the auction at the price desired and offer free shipping for the next lot.

It should get more notice, I'll sometimes just scan for the "free shipping" mark when scrolling down the page

Bubble mailer, plus a Safe-T-Mailer. Without those, slabs get cracked in bubble mailers.

Oh, wait, its only 5 'quality' quarters (cleaned and shiny, too). No need for Safe-T-Mailers.

Shipping but hear again it looks deceptive to the buyer
