    Ok, folks, here's the story:

Quite a few years ago I purchased and sent this 1921 Peace Dollar to PCGS for grading. Turns out that the coin has been overdipped a bit and they wouldn't slab it. I decided that to try and play the game until I got it slabbed could be expensive or even futile, so I would just keep it raw.

I have the opinion of someone that Chicago Coin Company thought to be a Peace Dollar expert, and I had to say that I agreed, but I thought I'd let the forum at large put in their 2¢.

Before you ask, most of the hairlines that you see in the puicture are the 2x2, not on the coin. Given that, what do you grade this?

Forgive the 2x2, it's old and I couldn't get the film smooth.

Difficult to grade from photos but I'd guess MS64 again maybe the pictures but like the reverse much better.

Mike, is that mark between the 1 and 9 on the obverse rim on the mylar or the coin?

This is a difficult coin to grade because of the pics, AU55/MS64 ???

21's are notoriously difficult to grade, regardless of the pics....:)

    I'm thinkin' like Dave. AU-58.

I didn't say it looked overdipped, I said that PCGS rejected it for cleaning.

As far as the green-looking thing, I have to check in the morning, but I think it's just crud and not on the coin.

I'm with Green AU-58. The reverse is very nice to me.:kewl:

OK - I'm confused, which is it, cleaning or over-dipped ?

Either way, I'd say the coin has MS details but that it has been harshly cleaned. Now you say that a lot of the hairlines are on the mylar. OK, but it looks like there's still plenty on the coin too.

Let me try to make it more consistent for you, Doug:

I thought that the coin was fine. PCGS bodybagged it for questionable cleaning. In retrospect, the coin looks dipped because the luster is a little washed out. The picture through the 2x2 shows hairlines that aren't on the coin, but are on the mylar. The coin is not mark-free, but if it had all of the marks you see in the pic, I would never have bought it.

I guess I just need better pictures.

How about just trying a pic out of the 2x2.

It's a slider. I'd probably call it AU-55/58 details, cleaned.

I'd also probably send it to ANACS for certification and a details grade.

I will. I will have to wait until tomorrow when I have more time before work, but yeah, I will.

I just took it out of the 2x2. Now, I will say this. The intervening years has seen a lot more experience come my way and my honest opinion is that although the luster is pretty good, it is a bit washed out, and that came from dipping the coin, likely to remove some toning, but there is absolutely no wear on the coin.
