Hey everyone! I am looking to sell my 1911-D St. Gaudens graded by PCGS as MS-65... I called a couple local dealers and they were quoting at "$umm... i get get those all day... thats a VERY common date! How about $1,700"... Personally, thats a bit offensive! LOL I am a novice compared to these men and i FULL WELL know that the "PCGS Price Guide" is in NO WAY an accurate measure of worth for the coin.... But to be over $1,500 off the price guide seems a but much. Even for their wholesale prices that they can apparently get them for! Can anyone please give me an UNBIASED price point for what i should be looking to get for this? Unfortunately, i got audited by the IRS and need to liquidate a couple coins.... I chose the St. Gaudens b/c i know they are very easy to come by... Thank you VERY VERY much for your time and opinion! Ryan (P.S. The PCGS price point for this coin is $3,350....)
I will venture an "opinion", but remember that opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one, and expressing same may make you appear as one. I would expect that you could realize a $2300 sale. I suggest that you place the coin in auction on eBay with the $2300 as an initial bid, which will cost you relatively little if you do not realize an initial bid. I believe you will soon determine if $2300 is too great, or too little a price.
Numismedia Wholesale is $2,625 and previous auction prices range from $2,300 to $2,750. As I am sure you expected, the fair price is right in the middle between the lowball dealers and the fantasy PCGS price guide.
$2500 seems like a fair price to me. I wouldn't sell it for less than $2400, and that's the price I would list it for on eBay. I believe you still get five free listings per month, so if it doesn't sell you pay nothing.
Prices are all funky on common date mint state Saints nowadays. MS-64's are quite high and the difference between 64's and 65's has compressed quite a bit. However, IMHO...anything less than $2G for a 65 is definite low balling and I would pass those dealers up. If you are interested in selling it, you should call the folks at Northern Nevada Coin in Carson City for a quote and see what they say on it. They are a very reputable dealer from my experience. Never hurts to get multiple opinions. Do you have any MS-64 Saints that you would rather part with instead? I'd sell those first, since their premiums are quite high right now. Sorry to hear about the IRS audit.
I would say that you could sell it for around $2,300 at auction. PCGS always over estimates the value of coins they've slabbed, for obvious reasons.
