$700 on $200 worth of pennies? Why?

Yep, that's what they're going for cause you can't get them from a bank. Kind of a crime that big promoters got them and they weren't put into circulation. Has anyone been able to get them for face value?

A fool and his money are soon parted. Current bid of $700 for $200 of common date cents makes absolutely no sense.....

You know, if they stay scarce in circulation, one could probably sell them soon for $1 a piece on eBay. Let's see, that would be $20,000. WOW! Does that seller have anymore? lol

Because you can sell a nice 8-peice uncirculated set of 2009's for somewhere around $2-$3. If you can do that 1000 times. . . .

    Or, perhaps more realistically -- 8 roll sets are going for around $20 to $25 I think. So, sell 50 sets at, say, $23 each . . . . that's $1150.

I'm not saying it's smart . . . . but it's a reason. The buyer will probably make money from it (but not a whole lot, particularly if one takes into account the time and effort to sell them all . . . )

Yeah, if there’s money to be made on them, it requires they remain scarce in circulation, otherwise they’ll buy a lot of gumballs. If they do remain scarce, I personally like the profit margin based on single coin sales. And yes, the thought of sorting and packaging them all is daunting - good thing I enjoy that kinda stuff. I’m sitting on mine before going through all that work to see if they become available at face value – if they do, so be it, I like gumballs. In the mean time, it’s good to see at least the box price has increased since I bought mine. You know, at one time right after the Birthplace was released, a $25 box of Birthplace P was going for $400. Crazy, huh?

I know I'm new at this game but I don't think I would pay that kind of scratch for new pennies (uncirculated or not).

I guess all the power to them.

I can see somebody who's frustrated (and impatient) at all the 2009 holes he has, and perhaps he hasn't seen a single 2009 cent all year (or perhaps just a few banged up specimens), saying "what the heck" and putting down $2-$3 ppd to fill up 8 holes at once with Unc items.

I had heard that some of the suppliers to HSN and CTV actually buy off of eBay a lot. I do not know how true that is, but it does sound plausible for large purchases like these.

I wonder if one of the coin shows, or even a Littleton would buy these. They would definitely more than double their return verses the purchase price.

What you should have said is it makes no CENTS. :)
Actually this sort of thing happens every year. However, it is now more noticable due to the anniversary coins. Eventually, as it happens every year, all those will start showing up in change. Many, many people that hoard them will eventually find that many, many others also hoarded them so they are now worthless.
I ran into that with the Bicentennial Quarters. Myself and friend attempted to hoard lots and lots of them. My friend actually had thousands of dollarw worth. After all those years at a coin show we attempted to sell them. YEAH, RIGHT. Best offer was $0.24 each as a hint no one wants them. Just way to many others saved them also. Same will soon happen with all these CENTS.
