Just thought I would post to not give up hope to score at random places. I was in Memphis this afternoon and visited a local shop. In there, clearly identified, was a Pontius Pilate siphilum type, (vf/f), and priced at $10. I bought some coins for my kids as well since I felt too guilty only buying this coin. Good deals are still out there! Check when you travel.
An example: JUDAEA, Procurators. Pontius Pilate. 26-36 CE. Æ Prutah (16mm, 2.31 gm, 10h). Dated RY 16 (29 CE). Obv: IOYΛIA KAI(CAPOC), three bound grain ears. Rev: TIBЄPIOY KAICAPO(C) L(Iς), simpulum. Meshorer 331; Hendin 648.
Yes sir, sorry. I was typing from memory at airport. Nice store, but like most 99% US coins. I just wanted to post to keep trying, check out US stores, pawn shops, antique malls, etc. Most are wastes of time, but then you find a score and a nice store like I visited. I have picked up Cleo VII, scarcer Sasanians, etc at such locations. Plus, it gets you out into places you might otherwise not see. The store I visited today actually specializes even more in sterling silver. I now have a great source for that should I ever need it. Sorry for the typo guys. Not a specialists in these. I should have looked up the type before I wrote it.
Silly me, I was reading silphium and had no idea the Judaean series included that. I see we differ on the definition of obverse.
My depiction follows Hendin 648. The grain ears are the obverse. Also, see: https://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?PA...R_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1
I didn’t purchase any ancients but I thought you would find it interesting that I stopped by that same shop today. Their foreign coin bargain bins are always great, and that’s what I go there for.
