Do you buy rolls from dealers or big box mailorder(the ones they roll themselves) in the hopes of finding a MS quality coin in the roll? I have tried it a few times, but get the feeling all the coins have been looked at before.I have yet to see a US Mint roll for sale at the few shows I have been to.

It just depends on the source of where they came from. A local coin store around here got a whole bunch of OBW penny rolls dating 1959-1990 and most all of them that were machine wrapped still had very tight ends. Now another coin store around here had a small box of OBWs dating 1959-early 1960s and most all of the ends on one side were loose and looked frazzled so they were most certainly searched.

You probably won't see a roll in a US Mint wrapper at a coin show - most dealer's won;t buy them. They buy their rolls at the bank for face value. So can you ;)

That is if they are looking for rolls of the year they were or are in. Good luck finding OBW's from say 1990 for example.

    rolls from dealers

i prefer rolls from a well known dealers. otherwise, now we can buy rolls direct from the u.s. mint. isn't it?.

Yes but not pennies or dimes as far as a know+ you pay quite a bit extra when you buy from the mint.

It's very easy to re-roll these coins back into the tight end "original" state. Don't assume that just because they are wrapped like this that they are original - especially if the date is known for a valuable variety.

    Hi,
It's better to buy Mint sewn bags , if you can. One example I can give is finding a bunch of 1983 DDO cents that were a brand new variety. I found those in a Mint sewn bag that a friend asked me to look through for him.
I thin rolls may have been sorted through but there is no way to tell. I know several dealers that purchase rolls in sales from collectors and just dont have the time to fiddle with looking for varieties and such. I guess its really up to what the dealer's policy is when purchasing rolls from customers.
    Have Fun,
    Bill

But it's soooo much more expensive and what about pennies and dimes??? BTW is there a sure fire way to get OBWs from the banks? I very rarely get them and I have never gotten an OBW roll of nickels or dimes...most always circulated rolls, even the ones that are shipped in by armored cars...

What I've done once or twice is I've gone to the customer service kiosk and I've gotten 1 or 2 rolls. There are sometimes though when I see interesting looking rolls in the register that I would like to buy. What you might wanna do for the future is go to a Wells Fargo or some other bank that sells them in the clear plastic wrapper and when you see an interesting roll in the register, explain you're into coins and would like to swap yours for theirs. They shouldn't think you're a scammer since they can see all the coins you're offering. I'm thinking about doing that with the 99Cent store I recently went to as one register has an old looking Bank of America roll of quarters with a date stamped on it that I couldn't read...could be old but I dunno.
