Iam a bit ticked off!! And iam wondering if anybody else is? Its in regards to an add thats been running for several weeks on National T.V advertising a $50 "Buffalo" Gold Coin Proof, I find this Add very misleading!!! It talks about Gold Prices and your thinking Your getting a real Gold coin here when your really getting someth- Ing thats just platted!! Also they constantly show the reverse of The coin with the buffalo, Careful just to show the front enough to See what it looks like. In the locks of the Indian,s head on front you can see the word copy But most people would not notice this right off, I find this add To be very deceptive!! Your comments?:hammer:
They were pretty smooth in saying it's clad 'in 31 mG pure gold' and a troy ounce is 31.1 Grams. They definitely and intentionally try to fake people out. Buyer beware. lol
Just saw it myself in the last couple hours on CNBC. Totally deceptive, BUT, there ARE people that will be sucked into buying it, as they are lead to belive it's a gold coin...those being the numismatically uneducated (or undereducated), same people that the TV coin hucksters take advantage of.
I think its just sad. People think they are getting some sort of deal when they buy this chunk of metal with miniscule amount of actual gold plated onto it. Its kind of like those 1916-D mercury dimes in MS condition that are "tributes" and have COPY written across them. I'd rather have a hole in my book than a "tribute" coin.
They have a very deceptive website too 50dollarBuffalo.com The National Collectors Mint is also repeatedly airing the (tribute) 1877 $50 Half Union Gold coin! The video enacts a shady Mint deal that's very film noir-ish ala Bogart and Maltese Falcon
I just did a quick calculation using an online conversion site. According to them 31 milligram = 0.00099667314363 troy ounce. So if Gold today was at $1130.90 per troy oz, then the gold in that tribute buffalo would fetch you a hefty $1.13 in gold. Not too bad for a $19.95 price tag huh?
I would bet that after advertising costs and production costs they make less than two or three dollars a coin, I did not see the word copy, or replica prominently displayed as per the law, Seems to me some attorney general from a cash strapped state could bring a case, unless they have bought political protection.
Hopefully those losers go broke paying for the ads to sell those pieces of junk and no gullible souls end up trying to get a bargain.
ad revenue is down overall, I'm sure the networks are glad to run any old garbage for a few bucks to offset broadcast costs. production of something like this cannot cost much nor take more than a handful of people to create. I doubt they'll go broke selling these things anymore than the coin shows on shopping networks would go out for overpricing merchandise. It's hard to believe but there are people actually buying this stuff!
$19.95 = Gold clad proof buffalo Priceless = The look on some poor schlub's face after buying a hundred of these proofs - then patiently waiting for gold to hit $2k an oz, walks confidently into his friendly coin store and WHAM! Reality smacks him in the face like a dead flounder.
So if my math is correct, when gold hits $50,000 per ounce, this baby will be worth its face value in gold. Or if you just want to break even, gold will have to hit $19,950 per ounce... but then there's the shipping. I guess they aren't such a good deal after all!:goofer:
What the heck are you guys talking about? This is a great coin..Just think how nice it will go with a HSN BU State Quarter Set In Gold AND Thats Right!! I said AND!! Platinum! I bet that set is worth Billions.. I feel Bad for The elderly Grandparents up Late.. watching the Used Car Salesmen of Coins .. Getting Suckered in thinking they are getting anything but Defaced coins.. I have a "Pal" at work with a Set.. He Brags about... I don't have the heart to tell him
If your "pal" is happy, let him think he got a deal. The pond scum that sold the set to him is definately happy (and laughing all the way to the bank!)
As usual most think it's some elderly people that get sucked in for those but in reality, it's a lot of people of all ages. Many are kids that harp on thier parents to get them one. Just like those painted coins, the presidential ones that are only stick ons, that company that makes those so called colletor plates and on and on and on. That's just show biz you know. Your all into coins so you notice those scams but look carefully and you'll see the Magic Bullet, vacuum cleaners, steam dust mops and cleaners and lots more that are purchased by the millions. If those coins were not being sold, the adds would have been dropped a long time ago. This coin collecting craze over the last several years makes a lot of people come up with those things. It's just buisness you know. I wonder how a Gold Plated 1943 Steel Cent would go over?
