I was at a coin show yesterday. Someone had a 10$ gold coin. I didn't pay attention to what year it was. It was in a pcgs details slab. Someone had completely smoothed the reverse and on the reverse was an image of a kid kind of daguerrotyped onto the back of the coin. I'm not into destroying coins and never would have this gold piece. But the ending result was pretty fantastic. I didn't want to ask to take pictures at the show. But just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? This guy who had it never had.
Agree. Really common on $1 gold, I have seen half eagles before, but never an eagle. Also extremely common on trimes and half dimes for those of lower economic circumstances, but have seen on dimes, quarters, and halves as well.
It was an image of a girl daguerrotyped onto the coin reverse. The reverse was completely flat. It was slabbed reverse facing. This thing really was cool. I bet that guy gets way over melt from someone. It's one of those, worth what someone will pay things. Was really nicely done. Just my impression, that's a big coin to do this to. Even back then. Maybe someone's daughter died? They did this as a tribute so to speak?
I didn't get much on where he'd gotten it. And he wasn't selling it. Just showing it to people to get opinions i guess. Maybe someone makes a stupid impulse offer and it's gone?
