This is one of the coins I picked up today. The flip only said Chinese coin but it could be something else, maybe Japanese. anyone
yep. Japanese 5 yen. I believe it says year 63 (Showa), which would make it 1988... but I always get them backward so it might be year 36, 1961... pretty sure its 1988, though.
Hi, your coin is a Japanese 5 Yen. It's difficult to make out the date from the scan but this design was issued from 1959 and I think they're still current. Value wise; if its an early one then about 25c or so in VF but if 1970s to today then only face value.
Beg to differ - it's showa 36 instead of 63 which is 1961. If you have trouble reading which way, look for the character "nen" which denotes the END, thus meaning that you should read from the other direction.
We must be looking at different scans. Except for the fact that it's upside down, the date on the obverse (bottom picture) is quite clearly Showa 36. That's this one: 年, meaning "Year". That rule will always guide you correctly with any coin using Chinese characters!
I read a bit of chinese... unfortunaly hen bu hao. I thought I recalled someone telling me they reversed it at some point in time. anyway - good call on the date.
