I just finished a box search of halves. Four 40%ers were secured (pictures will be posted in a separate thread) along with a clad proof 1978 S. Additionally, I found two low mintage collector strikes, 2002 P and 2005 D. Considering the low mintage of the clad halves, are they worth saving for potentially reaching prices above face value?
No.Normally I would say yes to the Proof but it looks like its seen better days. I only save the 1964's .
Well they made 3.1 million of the 2002 P and 3.5 million of the 2005 D halves, and most of them are still around in MS, and there are probably well less than 1 million Kennedy half dollar collectors. Sounds to me like there will be a surplus of both coins for a long time to come. Price depends on supply and demand, and the supply of these is much greater than the demand.
Unless you're trying to complete a date/mint mark set, I'd recommend throwing the NIFC issues back into circulation.
Those coins, in that condition, do not have any special numismatic value. Back in circulation is my vote.
The only way they would appreciate in value is if there were more collectors of Kennedy Halves. There aren’t.
Probably not worth selling anywhere, but they would be a great gift to a new collector or to someone who wants to start a collection. I keep NIFC Kennedys for tips and gifts to family members. If you put them in an air-tite, they look like an expensive gift to most people.
If you want to piece together a folder or album from circulation to make the hunt a little more interesting none of those cost you more than face value so I really don't see any harm in saving them, might be a fun little project while hunting silver. I did that hunting quarters for silver and W mintmarks and completed 1965-1998 P+D, P+D states and all P+D parks except for the last Ds of 2020 and tuskeegee which I'll eventually find and complete those two sets. Constantly upgrading when I'd find nicer ones. However don't become a hoarder of circulated NIFCs or proofs, Because the value isn't really there once they've circulated and it adds up and ties up money that just sits around, keep it within reason. With quarters If I had saved more than one nice example of each it would of built up to rolls and hundreds of dollars and space and just get out of hand. Hunting silver is boring if you aren't finding silver, and can get demotivating. sometimes a little side project like that is the motivation to just keep looking even if when you complete the album you decide to return it all to circulation of sell it for whatever you can get over cost on eBay and start over.
To keep or to sell, that is the question!!! I say, let your wallet, what you like and space be your guide!! I agree building a set while looking for silver like John suggested is a great idea!
There is a reason to support YNs and youngsters that could become YNs, with a little encouragement. Pay it forward, by donating accordingly. There must be an ankle biter or 2 in your neighborhood.
I carry a few clad JFK halves for tip jars - some youngsters get a kick out of them, others are confused
I keep NIFCs when I get them, just to fill the album holes. I keep all clad JFKs and don't take them back to the bank. The ones I need to complete a collection, I keep. The others, I spend. I also look for the "no FG" varieties (so far I haven't found one). They're also good to use for candle money at church or to put in the collection plate (along with dollars, of course). I only buy a few rolls at a time. I don't have an extra $500 to be buying boxes.
