In 1873 the sliver content of US coins were raised. Mid year. So coins with the higher content had arrows added at the date. (This mirrors 1853, except in 1853 the silver content was lowered).

The coins minted before the change didn't have the arrows.

Depending on when in the year the change occurred, determined which of the two is rarer.

There is no known 1873 S no arrows dime. Do you have pictures?

The change happened in early Feb. I don't show that any 1873 S no arrows dimes were struck.

Fake. I wonder if it is a contemporary fake.

I agree it is a fake. There were no 1873 no arrows dimes produced at the San Francisco mint. The devices just seem a bit off as well, so hard to say if it was a contemporary creation or a modern attempt.

Fake. They didn’t manufacture any San Francisco dimes without arrows and the cc one is unique all others was melted

Measurements and weight are correct for dime made without arrows. Dont see any signs of alterations. Silver content is correct as well. Could it be possible a coin got out

    Possibilities:
    1) someone added the S to a Philly 1873 no arrows
    2) someone "erased" the arrows on a 1873-S arrows (any weight or silver content difference is negligible)
    3) IT'S FAKE (just look how wrong the lettering/font is on the obverse alone!)

There is no way "a coin got out" if they did not mint any dimes without arrows. I agree with CoinCorgi, the font on the obverse (reverse for that matter) is not correct for the coin and the whole coin looks off.

To clarify...contemporary fake similar to the fantasy counterfeits fakes that Dan Carr is producing these days.

Poor quality fake. (and I would say NOT contemporary) Obverse lettering and date font are completely wrong, dentil are a joke. LIBERTY appears to be RAISED on the banner (something only seen on 20 cent pieces) S Mint mark I believe is the wrong style for era.

It is an interesting choice for a fake though

How did Dan get into this conversation?
This is too low of quality to make it a Fantasy piece!

I have to agree: has all the look of a badly made copy.

The overall look pretty much shouts "transfer die fake."
