Some companies gave out registered key ring tags. They were numbered and said something like "...if found drop in any mailbox."
You buy tokens to give to someone in appreciation, then that person is to "pay it forward" and give it to another person. The tokens are numbered, and if the recipients log it on the website, it's travels can be tracked. That is, until one of those pesky coin collectors keeps it for his collection! Just a way some guy makes his money.
