And you seriously consider TPG as a more reliable judge of authenticity than ANA? TPG might slap a meaningless label on it like the FIRST STRIKES and the designer signed pieces. Years from now that label may have value but in the moment that slab job deducts from the proceeds of the sale. If TPG did them all as a charitable donation and tax write off they could get good advertising and folks who hate slabs could break them out and keep the little card.
@harley bissell I do consider the top 3 TPG's, PCGS, NGC and ANACS to be reliable authenticators. The ANA does not authenticate coins any more. That is left to NGC, their chosen TPG. ANACS has not been associated with the ANA for several years, just in name. I thought that NGC would authenticate the coins before going to Ebay. Apparently that is not the case. Those who crack out the coin from the slab have lost the authenticity and grade opinion for that particular coin. The is tag now worthless.
To my knowledge and having spoken with the ANA at the last Denver WFoM, most coins were raw. Yes, they had many in TPG plastic, but would you buy a raw S VDB, 16-D or any other $100+ coin. Some of the coins that the ANA claims were authenticated by them, were in pre 1986 flips with a photo card. Easy to switch coins.
But eBay is so helpful. I have a $2 up for sale; they emailed me, personally, to tell me I could sell quicker if I added useful "item specifics" such as brand, size and color.
Then that is what is wrong: I am going to relist: Brand: Talkative Female. Size: Very Petite (includes well developed oversized vocal cords). Color: Bright Angry
Wrong site. We are discussing coins being sold by the American Numismatic Association, the link goes to the American Numismatic Society, two completely different organizations.
Hey...this guy's name is Mudd...wonder if related to that Civil War doc with the same name...? You know, the one who set that fugitive's broken leg after he jumped off that theatre balcony and escaped...think Booth was his name...???
Thanks Conder. They got me! My apologies everyone. (I messed that one up. ) Here it is. The American Numismatic Association Charitable sales on eBay https://charity.ebay.com/charity/American-Numismatic-Association/56830
