So I've been looking at 1894s morgans in the ms63-64 range for my collection. They usually trade for around $3,000 as you get close to an MS64. I cam across this one today and I'm curious what every one thinks the grade is? The price seems wrong to me for what they are describing it as. Any opinions would be a great help. The fields look shiny but it also looks rough overall--as if it was cleaned? Thanks
It is an 1894s, and it is raw? Right there says absolutely everything. I would not even consider that date as an uncertified coin.
If is sounds to good to be true, it is. You can send a raw 94-S to GC and they'll take care of getting it graded and will get you the going rate for it. Super easy. Ask yourself why the seller didn't do this instead of offering it as a raw coin for what I assume is a blow-out price.
I think I recognize the seller by the photo background... Canyon City Coin? They have lots of coins described as "fresh from original roll","bank bag" or "collection". I haven't bought from them but they seem legit having 100% positive feedback. They show some really nice lustrous coins... except, IMO, some that they refer to as "choice to gem bu" seem only to apply to the luster, disregarding bag marks, but I don't trust myself grading Morgans so I'm not sure how it would grade out by a TPG. Hopefully they send the pictured coin as some are flagged as having multiples. I just checked their store and couldn't find your S mint.
Certainly agree, but especially if an unknown seller with no past/established and personal dealings of trust/credibility with them, and also of course without a return policy. Regardless, should ask some questions about it and see how/what (and if) he answers, the way he answers or treats question(s), etc. Can tell a lot about someone that way, if maybe not quite enough to risk 3G or whatever he's asking (didn't say) on a raw coin.
And likely also one of the most widely used come-ons by nearly all unknown or questionable sellers...from an "estate sale."
I'll go no further than to say I considered a couple of this seller's coins, scrutinized the photos with extra care, dug deeply into feedback, read between the lines as appropriate, and then considered none of the offerings any further.
The 94S is a top ten in Morgans and finding this date/mm in this condition is certainly rare. And there are alot of unknowns here. Is this an adhoc auction? or is it a private seller? or are you dealing with an auction house you have history with and know and trust? Or is this a LCS where you may have some avenue for relief if it turns out sour. All these should enter into your next move. If it is indeed authentic the price seems a bit high to me. I think grey sheet puts this at about $2k in 64.
They have a liberal return policy, so those that don't like what they bought return and those that do keep so everybodys happy and feeding back positive?
This seller is known for juicing his photos and hiding issues with the coins. I would not buy from this seller.
Canyon City Coins uses that background for all of their listings. Do a little internet searching on them. They sell lots of problem coins and juice the photos to hide issues.
There exists an old adage "Buyer Beware" if you purchase anything on ebay and it is NOT in a slab (that does not even guarantee authenticity) then you may get stuck. There is one individual that takes pics of coins with parts of the constitution as a background that is known for selling fakes. If I see a coin I like, i send a message to the seller asking him/her if they will guarantee the coin and provide a hassle free money back guarantee. I have had a couple reply in the positive and others no reply. No reply to me indicates they are not willing to stand behind their product. Phil
I usually don't buy over the internet, but I have bought some quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies to fill holes. I've spent as much as $20 for some coins that look good. Over time, I have got to know who to buy from. I have also bought some coins from Mount Vernon. Not many, but some. I filled my FDR Silver Dimes and am now working on quarters. Anyway, buying from ebay is a toss-up until you get to know the sellers to trust. Oh yeah, I did buy a couple of Morgans from ebay, but they were graded by PCGS.
