A big hunk of silver.... In PVC (ugh)

I picked up this 1969 Uganda 30 Shilling Papal Silver Commemorative for a hair over melt. It cam in its original wallet, and is still in it's mint sealed 'protective' holder, which unfortunately, is PVC. Even the ID label is in PVC.

I can already hear the entire CT community screaming in unison - "Get that coin out of that PVC garbage and into a good acetone bath!!!!" (which I fully intend).

But.... The coin is 60mm in diameter, and I have nothing to safely transfer it to, and my LCS has no holders (for sale) that will accommodate the coin.

Do you guys think it'll be ok (enough) to leave it in it's holder until I can find a 60mm holder? I'm hoping I'll be able to find something at the winter FUN show in January, but I'm wondering if it'll happen with the latest (and future) CDC/COVID recommendations.

Any suggestions welcome!

The coin supply dealers (I use Wizard) have large non-PVC flips. I have bought them as large as 4x4. I have coins that I have left in the OGP but I worry about them. I also want to keep them with the OGP which can be problematic.

Oh Father, forgive them their sins, poor sops didn't know any better back 50+ years ago not to put coins in PVC holders.

 

The 'problem' with the flips mentioned above is I don't need 50 of them, and at $20 + shipping, that's over half what the coin cost me. I doubt I'll need even 10 in the next 30 years.

 

I use Wizard also but I usually stock up. The $9.95 minimum shipping can kill any incentive for a small order.

 

Why don't one of the members who already have a supply of the larger flips offer to mail Beefer one at a nominal cost?

That's a big hunk of silver! ...and just two (2) years before Idi Amin came to power.

 

Until you can get a proper holder use a food grade ziplock bag, they are polyethylene which is inert and coin safe. Gets it out of the PVC.

Ugh, that PVC is no joke. I just picked up a France 1965 mint set where the plastic is so deteriorated, it’s sticky on the outside, too…like if you spilled maple syrup on it. Bought it for the melt value of the 2 Franc, so not like I will be losing money on it either way… but it was so disgusting I was going to start a thread about it.

I might have a couple large used air-tites back home that probably would fit - if they measure correctly and look nice I’d be happy to share.

For my own similar situations, I use the PVC-free baseball card team bags that have a sealing strip on them. Works well enough for my raw Panama 20 Balboa coins.

 

So the coin is now soaking in acetone. It really didn't look as bad out of the plastic as it did in it, which is good. I'm going to soak it for about 24 hours, then into a ziplock it goes. I'll update with new pics after it's bath(s).

 

Look for an airtite Y60MM ring capsule. They do sell them as singles. Maybe find one on Amazon with prime and get free shipping even if you just do the free trial and cancel after.

yes, that one on amazon. Thanks. there's singles also but might be harder to find and would run about $5-$6 from a lot of vendors, or cheaper each but paying for shipping and handling.

Some other brand might make a direct fit 60mm, but he'd need to be really certain of the diameter because if it's off a little bit it will either rattle around or won't fit.
Which is why I suggest the one with the ring, there some flexibility there if it's a little bigger or smaller than 60mm cited. he can probably get a single for around $2-$3 each directly from Airtite website or other places, but the shipping/handling is probably going to at least be another $4.95.

I just loaded up that one on Amazon the two pack has free shipping without the amazon prime free trial (at least when I did it). So from Airtite, probably cost him $8 for one with the shipping cost added, or $9.95 for two with free shipping from Amazon, and I'm sure there's other places but getting around the shipping cost is a problem. Maybe he could add other sizes to the order or something else from wherever he buys it to make the shipping cost worthwhile to bring the cost of the capsule down....

At least with amazon, he can search the car and couches, shake out the change jar and take the change to a coinstar machine for a fee free Amazon gift card code, when I do that it doesn't hurt so much since it's change I never think about I just had laying around.

 

Try a 2 1/2 inch Mylar flip. Might be tight but it’ll be better for you until a permanent home is found.

However, I bought it through Amazon Prime from onfireguy.com. It was $12.95. I note that he is out of stock and Lighthouse says delivery in 6-8 weeks. I like it but I bristled a bit at the price. But I rationalized it on the basis of what the medallion cost me. It is too soon to see if there will be any storage effects but it is PVC free etc. etc.
