You know the coin shortage is serious when casinos are struggling

I play poker tournaments...it just hadn't occurred to me to ask about rolls at the main casino I go to for tournaments since I'm not a gambler and never deal with the machine games or getting change there.

The cashier at the cage grabbed a manager to find out how many rolls I could buy when I asked about quarters...2 was the answer. And this manager has known me for 2 decades! He showed me his entire single box of rolls...5 rolls total, until he gets more on Wednesday. So he was actually being super generous!

They have little use for halves so I asked for his half dollars...he gave me all of them...6 rolls.

By the way the poker tournament had 52 people in it and I got 4th place, thanks for asking! ;):joyful: I won almost $400:shame:

I've been ok with getting my boxes from the bank with a couple of exceptions. I can't order quarter boxes and I can only get one box of nickels a week vice 2 which was my normal.
Halve and cents have been no problem (so far). Knock on wood.

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

I assume that casinos are going digital.
Put cash in, no coins come out for wins, and when you’re done, if you have money left, the machine prints a receipt that you cash in, or bring to another machine for credit.
I miss the sound of the coins hitting the tray on a win. You might as well stay home and play video slots on an app, at that point (although, in most states, you don’t actually ‘win’ on an app).

I don't play the machines or table games but I know the machines take both paper cash and paper credit vouchers. As far as I know there are no games that use coins in the casinos out here. I think the casino just needs the change for other services like the restaurants and snack bars and paying out people's cash vouchers when they're done playing.

I was recently at Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City. No physical money was exchanged in the machines. It was all paper tickets and then you would cash out at an ATM looking device. If the ticket had a percentage of a dollar (ie: 100 dollars and 40 cents) you would get the 100 in cash and the 40 cents would be on another printed sheet for you to stick back in the kitty.

yes. they usually will have one or two machines that will pay out the coins somewhere in the casino, or the cashier cage can and will do it. Just saves them time loading the machines up to not have to load them with coins also except the one or two, and even that will just be like quarters, nickels, and cents, no dimes.

From my experience, you really have to do things that involve the player card so they can track what you are doing and see you are spending money and then they'll give you coin pretty easily. other than that they only want to give one or two rolls as a courtesy, but if they can see you gamble and play and they make money off you, they are usually much more giving with the rolled coin. Now, they aren't going to give you a box of quarters, unless you arrange something like that with a manager or a host to get you a box or something like that because you want one. Again, you'd need to be a trackable gambler that's paying the house their cut, not sure how tournament poker works, I'm sure they take a cut from the buy-in, but there's no rake and not sure if it tracks on players cards or you build points doing it. the more they can see your habits and what kind of customer you are the more likely they are to want to keep you happy and comp you for food or a room, or freeplay vouchers ect. they win as long as people are playing and they get their cut.

the coin machines are gone as far as I can tell. still though, if you want your change, they have to provide it so a casino is always going to have coin somewhere to do that. they can't just give you a ticket for 12 cents that you can't do anything with.

Good tips...except I genuinely play no slots or table games and I don't even play live/cash poker. I literally only play tournaments and unfortunately there are no comps at all for tournament entries or time. Since they've known me for a couple decades I once in a while remind them just how much I spend each year on tournaments and one of the managers typically comps me a couple hundred bucks of food credit.

I have had no difficulty in obtaining coins. No businesses in my area have signs up for a coin shortage and no one is saying anything about credit cards in lieu of cash.

I encountered one Little Ceasars pizza joint with a sign "exact change only". I decided to go somewhere else for a better pizza and my stomach thanked me.

The casino I stay at round up machine vouchers to half dollar to one dollar. Cashiers have two rolls of quarters in their banks but are told not to use them.

Very nice. Always good to walk out with more than you went in with.
As for slot machines, I used to drive to So. Lake Tahoe once a month to play them until they stopped using mechanical machines and replaced all but a few with computerized machines. They put in sound tracks of coins dropping just to appease the players.

I always wondered what that horrendous metal clanking against metal sound was for when it printed a ticket, seemed so freakin' stupid to me the times I've come across it. It's right up there with the ragtime handpay piano song for me.

it's like "why? This doesn't make waiting for the attendant for another half an hour to pay me any better!"

Advertising research showed that players missed the sound of the coins being paid out, so they added it to increase their desire to continue playing. I too find it just annoying. LOL

I use the local casino to cash in halves that I've searched, it usually goes okay. They gave me a bit of a hard time on an $800 dump one time, but otherwise it's okay.

Trying to purchase rolls there is another story altogether.

Best I could do was swap 2 rolls for 2 rolls, and they called out some manager who looked me up and down and asked what I wanted them for.

    Haven't been back since.
