Don't get me wrong guys. I've always been a big fan of Dr. Who, but the British Royal Mint? I always thought them to be somewhat above the so called "hype" thing......(State Quarters to follow?)
Yeah but then all the Super Sentai, Gundam, Mazinger, Ultraman, Chogokin, Gigantor, Gozilla, et al. Japanese coins will come along and stomp the crap out of Star Wars, Star Trek and Dr. Who medals... it will never end once it starts and eventually someone on some Congress or Mint advisory panel will propose a 'My Little Pony' or Barney series and the shame will simply kill the hobby.
Ingenius way to strum up sales, plus more collectables out on the market, cant ocmplain with such low mintage figures.
dont forget rodan, king ghidorah, destroyah and lets not forget gamera and all his friends. bleh i gotta say after looking at the rest of what the royal mint had to offer those dont seem strange at all. just as bad as whats getting minted over here. lol
The Royal Mint mints coins for over a hundred different countries and they are also an aggressive marketing machine. They will market whatever they can to make moolah. If there was a demand for coins or medals with a 'world's greatest toilets' theme, with a person sitting astride each throne straining away, they would take the money and do it. Its a far cry from the days of the late 18th century when they wouldn't even mint coins of the realm in base metal because they thought it was beneath them to do so...
C'mon, those are medals, not coins. Can easily be ignored by anybody who does not like/want them. In my opinion, the plethora of new coins - particularly anything that is "London 2012" related - is much more annoying, and costly for "complete" or "by type" collectors ... Christian
Now that would be a crappy coin series I have to admit...I would buy a coin of Godzilla stomping an out of scale Tokyo. Or carpet-covered Mothra, too! I always root for the "monsters" in the movies...even today I can't watch King Kong because I hate the ending
