New fakes - Part 2 - Pescennius Niger - RIC 44b

    Another offering from the same seller as the Domitian 569 posted previously.

    Soft detail, no flow lines, edges look like they have been filed to hide the casting seam.

    Someone was keen to secure this one and sniped twice at the last second but secured it at the $300 opening price.

    Obv:- IMP CAES C PESCEN NIGER IVSTI AVG, Laureate head right
    Rev:- IVSTI AVG, Shield decorated with stars, set atop small shield, supported by opposed capricorns.
    Minted in Antioch
    Reference:- RIC 44b.

    Another interesting clue as to this being a fake is on the reverse - the fields are way too even and smooth, and the edges of the coin show no type of strike fractures. I would have thought this type would be struck on much less even flans.
